Do I Need To Sanitize Bottles Pre-Bottling?

Hi! I make an aftershave splash that I bottle in 4oz Boston Round glass bottles. They arrive optically spotless from the manufacturer. Do I need to sanitize them prior to bottling? I've used no-rinse sanitizers like Starsan efore for beer making. But I don't drink aftershave.... Plus my...

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

wow so it works at a dilution of .1%? That would be 2 drops in a 4 oz bottle. Is that correct?

    What preservative do you use?

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

I never considered salts. Interesting. Question: would it be constructive to sterilize my bottles before filling them, like people do when they make beer?

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

I know I know. Plenty of chemicals. You know what I meant... should I add some SLS just for fun? ;)

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

Why is it that a common liqueur at 30% alcohol that contains no preservatives but probably quite a bit of sugar doesn't turn rancid sitting on my countertop for two years?

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

Well I'm confused because I see a lot of products that list "alcohol as preservative". So if my product is 30% ethanol, I'm not sure why I'd need to add a chemical.

    Avoiding Contanimation - Proper water?

From everything I've read, 25% to 30% ethanol is sufficient as a preservative. I am making an aftershave for people that prefer lower concentrations of alcohol (normally 80+%). My product is actually very similar to this product...

Scent Maturity - EO and Alcohol

Hey there! I've been working on an aftershave product that I'm quite happy with. It consists of a blend of about 5 essential oils (30 drops per 4 oz bottle) in a solution that is 1 part grain alcohol (190 proof), 1 part witch hazel and 1 part water. I have noticed that the scent improves over...

    Do I need a Preservative?

I think I might just proceed with my natural alcohol based product as planned and be damned if the FDA ever cares. Honestly I suffered for years with debilitating and painful/embarrassing at times scalp, gums and groin conditions because of SLS. Switched to alternative products and have been...

    Hey thanks for contributing this.

    Do I need a Preservative?

This makes sense to me. I can't imagine Etsy flagrantly (fragrantly? Sorry, couldn't help myself :-) breaking the law by allowing so many vendors to sell an illicit substance. I buy everclear - 190 proof - off the shelf at my local liquor shop.

    Do I need a Preservative?

Thanks IrishLass! The company has confirmed on multiple occasions that the only alc in their aftershave is from the witch hazel. And that it's specifically less than 5%. About the stinging - I emailed them with the same question. They claim the sting is from the oil. I do believe the...

    Do I need a Preservative?

I see your point, though that company's been around for almost 10 years. It's frustrating because I like my product as is with grain alcohol. There are SO many people on Etsy selling identical products literally listing vodka, bourbon and spiced rum in their ingredients.

    Do I need a Preservative?

That would seem to make sense, but they sell their product as is on Amazon and it sells like hotcakes. They must have sold 10s of 1ks of bottles. I did email them ans asked, "how does it stay preserved though if there's so little alcohol?" Their reply: "I don't actually know the...

    Do I need a Preservative?

Hi and thanks for clarifying. I could, but I'm trying to make a natural product and rubbing alcohol contains poisonous additives. This product: https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/featured-aftershave-ogallala-bay-rum.204807/ Their only ingredients are witch hazel and distilled water...

    Do I need a Preservative?

Hey there. So I produced an aftershave (splash) product that I love and use all the time. I would like to try my hand at selling it, but it contains 25% grain alcohol. And I don't think it would be legal to sell or ship it (unless I had a liquor license) - even though you'd be crazy to...

    Alcohol Free Safe for EO?

Thank you. The problem is I don't have a liquor license, so I can't ship a product usign grain alcohol. And I don't want to use something like denatured alcohol. Unless I'm missing something?

    Alcohol Free Safe for EO?

Hi, I'm making an aftershave and was hoping to to make one that is very low in alcohol. I was planning to make it using a formulation very similar to the product below except using EO instead of FO. The manufacturer claims their product is only 5% alcohol and that the only source of alcohol...
