    Natural Colorants

Natural clay colorants are easy to blend and leave no graininess, neither does charcoal. Tumeric doesn't and I love paprika although it can leave flecks, cocoa definately leaves specks because it can be hard to blend but I like cocoa specks. Oxides blend well and cinnamon isn't too bad but...

    Palm Oil

Red palm oil is inferior, don't bother, amazon has nice inexpensive palm oil. Don't want to kill orangatans then buy palm oil from fair trade, sustainable harvest farms, which will be more expensive. Also not to sound like I am making and excuse but much of the world uses palm oil for cooking...

    fragrance fade

I find that most recipes need more scent than specified so I use the smell test to decide. This can be tricky though. You don't want seeping. Truth is we spend a lot of money on scents to sell soap not to use soap. Almost all scents will fade away. I do have my favorite brands though and once...

How to figure how much oil for mold.

I know this may sound dumb but I hate math so all I do is fill my mold with water and then measure that to get my volume. Then I reverse engineer the water amount on a soap calc and oila! It isn't very scientific but it works every time.

Advice needed from experienced FO users in CP please!

fo's I use a room temp method to make soap and I have never had to add fo's at any particular temp and it seems fine. You can add sugar with fo's. Sugars are more responsible for soap accelerations than fo's. You can absolutely mix fo's together with no problem. I always add my fo's after a...

You wait a long time for your soap to dry. Sometimes a very long time.

How can I make this soap more slippery?

I think lanolin makes the best shaving soap. It goes in all my shaving soap. It's unique lathering ability makes it the perfect shaving ingredient. Adding olive oil as your primary oil will also make your bar more slippery. Seriously though try the lanolin!

What soapy thing have you done today?

Spent the morning carving soap. I have seen many videos using woodcarving tools but it always looks a little heavy handed and then I thought linoleum cutter. I used to make linoleum prints and the tools are much finer. It works very well. I was quite happy with the results.

    Hello

The size will depend on the space she has but think picture frames covered in screening that will slide into a grooved rack. The rack can be covered on three sides with screening and the front can have framed doors covered in screening. The picture frame screening will have to hold a lot of...

Advice needed from experienced FO users in CP please!

I never had problems with f.o.s till I bought those cheap collections on ebay. They were cheap and nearly all of the 32 bottles I bought caused ricing or leaching. The quality of the f.o.s has a lot to do with how it reacts. I have also found that some companies scents last better in the soaps (...

    Crumbly When cutting

Crumbly issues Crumbly bottoms can be common with clay soaps, along with salt. I like to pour clay soaps in individual molds to avoid cutting altogether. I also have a love hate relationship with titanium dioxide. If you added any it can cause crumbling. Most common reason for crumbling clay...

Letting your customers do the curing - thoughts?

It's just not a good idea. Only give new soap to relatives. There are just so many things that could come back to haunt you. Of course I am really weird about the subject. I won't sell my soaps until at least 6 months. I want buyers to rave about how soapy and hard my bars are.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I have been soaping for 4 months now and have made over 120 soaps, each a different recipe. Just took a very ugly loaf of kelp soap and cut it up and made two pretty loaves of kelpy and kaolin soap. Pureed tomatoes for tomato and basil soap and pureed a papaya for well papaya soap, then I put...
