    Lotion PH?

I've not made my first batch of lotion for use yet but have done a bit of reading. So, I am no expert by any means but from what I've read the ph should be somewhere between 4 & 7 with 5.5 to 6.5 being the most common range that most shoot for. However if you have sensitive skin you may want to...

Man that is scary stuff! I am so glad that you are okay. I hate to hear when someone gets hurt. Okay everyone. All together now. GOGGLES ON!!!

    dents and divots

Here is what I do. I pour them and wait for them to cool. If there are any that look dented (or whatever) I use my heat gun (or you can use a blow dryer) to warm and "remelt" the tops. That seems to help them even out. Just one note...be careful not to hold it too close to the kind of molds that...

    Liability Insurance

Not sure that I will be a lot of help but here are a couple of things I have read about. First of all you will need the liability insurance as you were talking about. I have read on another forum that you could use RLI or the Soap Guild. I have heard about a lot of people using the Guild...

    arent lotion bars great?

I love my lotion bars too. My daughter especially loves them. She keeps stealing mine! My recipe is very similar to heartsong's but I don't use the dryflo or cornstarch since it seems to absorb into the skin fairly quickly. Here is my recipe. 1 oz sweet almond oil 1 oz beeswax ½ oz...

can you help? - gooky brain like!

I love the look of the cut soap. Not sure if this will help or not but according to Kathy Miller's web page (great source of info!!!) this kind of sounds/looks like "Alien Brains" syndrom. Apparently it can happen if insualted for too long. How long do you leave the soaps insulated? Here is a...

    Scar Cream

This sounds fantastic but you may want to rethink the water portion unless you're planning on putting a preservative in the cream. Just making a simple body/belly butter without the water and including the wonderful suggestions others made would be wonderful. Let us know how it comes out and her...

    lotion bar

They came out really easily. After I pour them I pop them in the freezer for a while. If they look funky or anything like that I get out my heat gun (I use for embossing on cards) and melt them just to fill in the gaps or make them look smooth or flat...put them back in the freezer for a while...

Polysorbate 20 and Polysorbate 80... what's the difference?

You're welcome. :) Let me know how they turn out!

Polysorbate 20 and Polysorbate 80... what's the difference?

I did a little "research" on a while back and the best I can come up with is that you can use either one. It seems that poly 20 is used more in cosmetics than poly 80. Apparently poly 20 is less viscous and will make a less stiff product...such as scrubs, etc. From what I have read they are both...

preservative for lotion, allergic to propylene glycol

Well I don't know a lot about preservatives but here is what I have found out about a few others you might check out. LiquaPar Oil is a mixture of Isopropylparaben (and) Isobutylparaben (and) Butylparaben. Optiphen is phenoxyethanol and an emollient base (don't know what that emollient base...

    What the heck happened?????

Glad you figured out what happened. While the batch may have not turned you learned a lot, didn't ya? From what I've read here even the most seasoned soaper makes a flub from time to time. So you're not stupid at all...just human. :) Good luck with your next batch and let us know how it turns out.

    Lard Soapers I need input

Some "shortening" is from soy. Some is from palm. Some are mixtures. But lard is a different "animal" all together. (pun intended  )

    What the heck happened?????

Oh man! I feel for you. I am by no means an expert, but if you look at Miller's Soap Troubleshooting page http://www.millersoap.com/trouble.html it says that soap that turns out this way is generally heavy in lye. I looked at your recipe and put it in a calculator and it all seemed fine. So am...
