Switching away from Pomace Olive Oil to Sunflower Oil

Hello friends! I recently reloaded my warming tank with my base oil recipe containing 33% Pomace Olive Oil. The first two soap batches after the reload have been disasters. A 100% loss. In both instances, I used what I knew was a problematic FO. So, I was prepared to move quickly. Both of them...

Where in Minneapolis are you? I'm in NE, about 3 miles above downtown.

    New FCS Molds!

Finally! The molds I ordered from For Crafts Sake arrived yesterday. I am like a kid with a new bike at Christmas. 😁😁😁

    Unusual Lye Tank

Update with pics attached. The EPDM washers are installed, and the Milk Can Lye Tank is in the shop. I ended up buying two thickness sizes of washers. That was a good thing in the end. You can see in the second picture one is white and the other is black.

    Why I Started Making Soap!!!

Hello and welcome! I came to it sideways. I started out wanting to learn how to make shaving soap nearly seven years ago. I hated paying what amounts to extorsion, as far as I am concerned, for small bits of metal and plastic, aka cartridge razors. I struggled with razor burn and irritation...

    Unusual Lye Tank

I am anxious to get it up and running to be sure. Right now I have 100 or so bars of soap I need to trim and box and a couple of other batches that will be ready in another week or so. AND, I ordered a couple of molds from For Crafts Sake that should be coming in another couple of weeks. I am...

    Unusual Lye Tank

I don't have any pics of my own yet, but this is it on the Shenandoah Homestead Supply website. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1871/4193/products/IMG_1261_1024x1024.jpg?v=1549386727 The stainless steel tap is a $29 add-on, which IMO is worth every penny if I don't have to do it. I haven't...

    Unusual Lye Tank

Thank you for that link, it was quite informative! I also emailed Shenandoah Homestead Supply and they confirmed that the washer for the spout is indeed silicone, and the stem of the spout is 16mm in diameter. I found FDA compliant EPDM washers at McMaster-Carr and ordered some.

    Unusual Lye Tank

Hey everyone - I have a bit of a dilemma. I recently purchased a 5-gallon stainless steel milk can with a stainless steel spout from Shenandoah Homestead Supply with the intent of using it as a small lye tank. This is definitely an off-label use, their customers are dairy farmers. My concern is...

It's not all that it's cracked up to be.

I have been on a similar journey. I started with HP shaving soap and moved into CP in part because it's a natural pairing, and I really dislike how commercial syndet soaps feel on my skin. Likewise, I don't do any of the above. No colors, shapes, embeds, blah, blah, blah. I don't even do markets...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Trimmed and boxed 80 CP bar soaps. Only 3 full trays of 80 to go!

    Your favorite immersion blender?

I replaced my original el cheapo stick blender recently. Got a Kitchen Aid from Target for $40. Two speeds and the immersion end is metal. Works like a champ.

First crack at a recipe and blew it

I don't have any ROE to add to the Soybean Oil, however, because it is a consumer grade additive, it already has some preservatives in it. I am hoping that will be enough to ward off DOS. Once I plugged my numbers into SoapCalc, I realized that the CO was too high. I revised my numbers and...

First crack at a recipe and blew it

Fellow soapers - I am here to share what I think are a couple of noob lessons learned. A little back story first: For last Christmas my father in-law, ever the man to go overboard with everything, bought my DW and I a huge bag of popcorn kernels and a gallon of soybean oil based butter...

    Hello Soapers!

Thank you. I was thinking along the same lines. Learn the ropes of CP before moving into HP. My wife's extended family has a Christmas tradition of giving at least one personally created (not necessarily hand made) gift every year, which gets to be challenging to be semi-original every year. If...

    Hello Soapers!

It's been a curious journey that lead me to you. My wife and I are minor players in the the antique business. We have dabbled in it for several years and have participated in our fair share of occasional sales and having space in shops along with other sellers. We also have well paying careers...
