Alternative to beef fat/tallow AND palm oil?

Hey everyone, thanks for all the tips. You've given me some good ideas to take away! I'm thinking I might try cocoa butter and castor oil in our next batch. But I'll definitely keep a record and just experiment until I find something that works! I wan't to keep it fairly bubbly too. I'll keep...

    what does "gel" mean?

thanks for the replies! I think I understand it now - so you can promote your soap to gel by insulating it to keep it warm while it's curing? And it's purely an aesthetic preference...

Camomile tea soap (4th batch ever)

Thanks everyone for the replies! Well, now I know to ALWAYS check any recipes with a lye calculator. I've actually used one of the recipes in this book before, which turned out good and not lye heavy, but I'll always make sure to check from now on. Also, yeah I did think that it didn't seem...

    what does "gel" mean?

Hi, I've seen the term used a lot when referring to soaps and I've been wondering what it meant? Sorry if that's a stupid question (also I wasn't sure what forum to put this in) Thanks! Rebecca

Alternative to beef fat/tallow AND palm oil?

Hi, I'm a relatively new soap maker and have recently been trying to make soap with my housemate. We are both vegetarian and live in a communal house with 6 other people, all of whom try our best to live in an environmentally conscious way. I made a coffee soap recipe a few years ago...

Camomile tea soap (4th batch ever)

Hi! I'm relatively new to soap making... did it a couple of times a few years ago (only once with success) and a couple of times this year, with my friend. Our most recent soap that we made last week used camomile tea as the liquid, and we included camomile and jasmine essential oils...

    Help with soap recipe?

Hi, I'm not new here but I haven't made any soap for a few years and even then, I only tried a couple of times (once successfully) so I need a little help with a recipe I just made! My friend and I decided to make a recipe from "The Handmade Soap Book" by Melinda Coss. Thing is, we couldn't...

First bath bombs ever! (don't laugh...! :P)

Oooh, I'm all for nice strong fragrances so I will have to try it! Thank you, I just used a few drops of green liquid food colouring and mixed it in really well with my fingers.

First bath bombs ever! (don't laugh...! :P)

IanT - Yeah, that's why I used cheap food flavouring in the vanilla ones. :P And I'm just going to use them myself so if it dries my skin or something, it's my own fault. Overthemoon - It was quite fun and easy! I only used olive because it was all I had and I didn't want to buy anything else...

First bath bombs ever! (don't laugh...! :P)

Thank you :) I suppose I'm just sore because the ingredients cost a fair amount! But I will definitely work on it. :)

    Scrumptious shoes!

Thank you! :) I'm trying to find som ivory or cream ones so I can make chocolate swirls to put on them.

First bath bombs ever! (don't laugh...! :P)

Welll because I'm currently in rented accomodation, and I already had a slight surface-stripping crisis at home when I accidentally flung lye all over the kitchen, I've had to settle for slightly less dangerous and corrosive crafts. So I thought I'd try my hand at bath bombs! I went and...

    Scrumptious shoes!

Aww, you really think so? I would love to try but the problem is actually finding the shoes to decorate. The coral pair cost me £4 but the shop where I got them is clearing their stock of those shoes so they've pretty much all gone. :( I go into every charity shop on my road (and there's a LOT)...

    Don't know where to start!

Thank you kindly for the replies and help, I realised after I posted it I should have just looked around a bit harder. Sorry for wasting your time! But the soap calculators tended to confuse me because I just couldn't figure out how much I would be making or what any of the properties I...

    Scrumptious shoes!

Hello! Because I am extremely inefficient and inexperienced at soapmaking, I thought I'd share some of the other things I make in the meantime. Currently I've been working on these: I didn't make the shoes (thought I'd love to know how, along with everything else ever) but I made all the...

    Don't know where to start!

I don't understand the soap calculators at all. Last time I used one I came out with the horrible lemon soap. Also, I was just wondering if crayons in particular worked

    Don't know where to start!

hiiii. I'm not new on here, I just haven't been on for a very long time. Uni has kept me busy, also I am in rented accomodation so I am slightly wary of bringing lye and stuff into it in case I set off the fire alarm or damage anything, so I haven't made any soap for a LONG time. So far I have...

    My Second Soap!

Topcat - yes, definitely going for silicone or just plastic tupperware next time (did my first soap in a big tupperware tray and it worked out fine.) And I took your advice and rolled all the soap (including the ugly cutouts) into balls. :) I didn't roll them in anything as they were meant to...
