What on earth happened to my second batch of soap.

If you would have read the post more carefully rather than making an assumption that everyone else is an idiot you would clearly see where it says "I tested the batch with anthocyanin liquid and it came with a weird result as well:" And then has a picture of the soap with a drop of anthocyanin...

What on earth happened to my second batch of soap.

So I need proof that science works the way that it does? I think you should probably read up on what anthocyanins are yourself before calling someone out like that. And I never said that my soap turned out blue. I said it turned blue after testing with anthocyanins which indicates a PH of 8-9 as...

What on earth happened to my second batch of soap.

I dont zap test. Risking permanent damage to my tongue doesn't seem like a very smart idea to me. Even if it's an incredibly low chance. I mean it's an incredibly low chance that I would actually splash KoH into my eyes as well, but that doesn't mean I am not going to wear goggles when handling...

What on earth happened to my second batch of soap.

That's weird. I can see them on my end. Originally I had the wrong links but I fixed them afterwards. Here are direct links: Picture 1: http://s22.postimg.org/y3iwk5es0/IMG_20160416_230038_1.jpg Picture 2: http://s22.postimg.org/dxfel9j4g/IMG_20160416_230016_2.jpg Picture 3...

What on earth happened to my second batch of soap.

Hey friends, I ventured into my first soapmaking these past two days. Yesterday I made a batch of cleaning soap (80% coconut/20% soybean) that turned out absolutely perfect. Here's a picture: Today however something catastrophic has happened to my soap. This time I was making my first batch...

Question about utensils and soap making.

Bumping this to make sure I've done everything right here. Ended up finding a great deal on a large cast iron dutch oven and decided to use that for making soap. Apparently that's what soap was made in in the old days, but just to be sure cast iron won't react with KoH to make hydrogen gas...

    Honey Soap

Lye being present doesn't have any effect on the honey itself. It's the exothermic heat in the reaction with the water that would process the honey from its natural state into basically liquid fructose. What's the purpose of using honey then if not for the benefits to the skin? It won't make...

    Honey Soap

Wouldn't adding the honey during the hot phase defeat the purpose of using honey? Honey breaks down at 160 degrees Fahrenheit destroying most the enzymes that make honey a strong nutrient (for both the inside and outside of the body). The exothermic reaction of lye and water goes well beyond...

    Some great questions. Read on!

I would personally be absolutely sure any Lye I am using is not made with the mercury vat method before purchasing. Another member on here (Irishlass I believe) pointed me in the direction of Essential Depot who sell Lye that is officially stated as not being made using the mercury chlor-alkali...

Question about utensils and soap making.

I didn't make soap. I made shower gel out of Dr. Bronners and it turned into mead because I followed a bad recipe I found on the net. I'd say honestly that making soap appears easier than making hollandaise sauce from scratch. Especially using the pharmaceutical method. Understood, but I won't...

Question about utensils and soap making.

It isn't exactly rocket science. I do stuff for other hobbies that is far more advanced than making soap is. The sweet almond and jojoba oil are for my own personal stash at home. Will be using coconut and palm oil for cleaning potentially with some soybean to cut costs of each batch down some...

Question about utensils and soap making.

Great. I saw one guy using stainless steel for his solution, but thought that I had heard in the past that it would react with KoH so I wasn't sure on that. I'm only going to be buying 7-8lbs of each oil and the cost isn't really that much more than buying 2-3lbs of it elsewhere. You can buy...

Question about utensils and soap making.

Greetings all, I have decided to go ahead and start making my own soap as of next week after my honey soap made from Dr. Bronners turned into mead (check the thread out here for why you shouldn't follow random recipes on the internet http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=59055) . I am...

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

Yeah no surprise there really. They advertise as being "castile soap" even though their stuff is made from mostly coconut oil. In fact there's even more palm kernel oil than olive in their soap.

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

Excellent find thanks. I was never able to actually find someone selling KoH that explicitly stated it wasn't made in a mercury vat. You would think they would have totally phased it out, but Mercury being found in canned tomatoes and cage free egg shells recently definitely causes concern when...

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

Yes it's definitely something I'd like to do. However some concerns I have are that I have housemates, and fumes from lye may be of particular concern for one of them. The other one is that I need to find a source of Potassium Hydroxide that I am absolutely sure is 100% mercury free. The reason...

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

So my best bet is likely to just make a small batch to last a week before it ferments? Dr. Bronner's soap needs a pretty heavy level of dilution to not be really harsh on the skin and when you dilute it like that it just ends up more like water than soap. The formula i'm using at the moment...

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

I see thanks. I actually got the recipe online and it didn't mention needing any preservatives so I figured the honey was acting as a preservative. From what I understood, honey being hygroscopic would limit the available water to bacteria in the solution (my mixture was 1/2 cup soap to 1cup...

My liquid soap has a yeast smell to it.

Hello SMF this is my first post on here. I made a batch of liquid soap using Dr. Bronners as the base (would eventually like to make my own Castille soap in the near future, but decided to just use their soap to start out with) out of oatmeal, honey, herbs, and essential oils. After about 2...
