    Mechanic Soap

Kerosene is considered "inherently biodegradable". That's not the same kind of biodegradable as soap, synthetic detergents or other things that can be flushed down the drain. It's a slow process that cannot be completed at a sewage treatment plant. Kerosene is also toxic to aquatic life, with...

    Pyrex and Sodium Hydroxide

2, 4 and 5. Pyrex used to be borosilicate glass which is also used in laboratories and relatively resistant to chemicals. But they're now using cheaper soda-lime glass which is not as chemically resistant and also shatters more easily due to temperature changes.

    Mechanic Soap

I don't want to start a discussion, just for your information/consideration: Kerosene should not be flushed down the drain. Sewage treatment plants rely on biological processes to remove contaminations from the water and kerosene is not biodegradeable. Of course it's all a matter of scale and...

Moving and packing stink! I'm losing my mind lol...

You can discard lye through the drain if you dilute it enough. Just make sure to wear your gloves and goggles and avoid any splashes. Drain cleaner is mostly lye and dishwashing detergent also used to contain lye, so it's really nothing unusual. I'm going to move in a few months too and I...

    Homemade coconut oil for soapmaking

I have some unrefined coconut oil that I bought maybe a year or a year and a half ago. It's already past its expiration date (05/2015) but it still smells fine. I don't keep it refrigerated. Oils become rancid by oxidation. As a rule of thumb: the more unsaturated fats, the more prone to...

    Homemade coconut oil for soapmaking

Sounds like a really interesting project. I love making use of things that would otherwise be garbage, unfortunately coconut trees aren't doing well around here. I'd be very interested in any updates on how it went. Well if coconuts grew on your lawn in Canada, I think it would be time for us...

What if your preferred soap thickness?

I prefer the bar shape over the slice of bread. Just measured my "perfectly sized" bar and it's about 8 x 5 x 3.5 cm (3.15 x 2 x 1.4 in). I like to have a big chunk to hold in my hand. Somehow makes me feel more manly while I play around with that wonderful foam and smell like a fairy princess.

"I will PAY you to teach me!"

If people decide that for themselves: It's their life. They should be confronted with the truth, but if they refuse to believe it, there's really not much you can do except being available in case they change their mind. But what's always tragic is if people make these decisions for other...

    Scale Quality

As long as you're weighing everything with the same scale, I don't see a problem if the scale is a little off. The important part is that the ratios are correct, it doesn't really matter whether you end up with 4g more or less batter. Of course, a bad scale might also get the ratios wrong. But...

    lye concentration

The amount of water you need is 2 x the amount of lye. So say you have 100g of lye, then you need 2 x 100g of water. 100g lye + 200g water = 300g solution 100g lye / 300g solution = 33%

    Molding/Stamping Curing Soap?

That's pretty much how industrial soap is made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1baLzbathvI

Cabbage ph test on my soap samples

Do: buy a scale weigh your ingredients and use the same units for all of them (I'm biased, but I think grams are the easiest unit to work with) weigh the lye in a separate container from the water, so you can put some of it back if you accidentally pour in too much wear safety...

What percentage should water be in CP soap?

Most of the time, something between 30% and 33% seems to be recommended around here. I think you would use a higher concentration if you have a lot of olive oil in your soap and a lower concentration for coconut oil (for example), but I'm still a little wonky on that. I've just always used 33%...

    Why oh WHY???

Propofol is a really great anesthetic. I had it for myself once and I totally understand why Michael Jackson took it. But it also has great properties and if you use it in a hospital setting, it is very safe. Phenol has been used to kill thousands of people in Auschwitz, so I'd say it's...

Cost increase of olive oil at Sam's Club

We pay 3.19€ ($3.40) for 750ml at the German Aldi and that's 100% extra virgin olive oil.

[CP]How can I prevent scent's loss after curing soap

What about cellophane? I've found a German website where they did some testing and apparently cellophane is pretty good at keeping the scent in the soap. They used blood orange at 5% ppo with CP soap and packed it in cellophane. After a year, they could still clearly smell the blood orange which...

    Chicken fat in soap, anyone?

Oh, I'm trying to eat all of it but I'm just using too much stock. I go through one container of schmaltz and then I have no more stock so I make a new batch with 3 new containers of schmaltz while I still have the other two from the previous batch. I just can't keep up. Thanks for...

    Chicken fat in soap, anyone?

I always have a lot of chicken fat left over from making stock and I end up throwing most of it away. So... any new experiences?
