    Antibacterial soap (is junk)

I suppose most of us knew, or suspected a lot of what this article is talking about. But it's good info for when those of you who sell, get asked about it. http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/04/mounting-data-suggest-antibacterial-soaps-do-more-harm-than-good/

    soap crumbled after cut...

Newbie here, but I would think you could use a thin bladed saw to cut down any more of that soap. It would be a total mess with the bits of soap, but you could probably get some better sized bars without them breaking apart from your pieces you have left. Try a coping saw. Just a thought.

swedish guy tries to make soap.

I hope it's not too soon Sweden is so metal, even their soap is black! \m/ Seriously, new to this hobby myself. Learning a lot from your soap adventure. As for an all vegetable batch, my first was Canolive II at millersoap.com. It's working for me, although with no scents, if...

    How much colorant?

So they were 5 gram jars... or jarlettes - so tiny. Like smaller than what wifey's makeup comes in. Ain't more than a teaspoon or two in there, huh? Considering online sources charge $3-$5 an ounce, coloring soaps ends up being not cheap.... Ah. I see my problem. grams to ounces. This...

    How much colorant?

Can't find the link; I'm at work and can't remember my super-great amazon password. It was a pack of powders in 3 or 5 gram vials. 5 or 6 various colors. (helpful, right?) CP Soap is what I see me doing in the forseeable future. I knew it was a poor question when I was writing it. Just...

    How much colorant?

So I needed to fill an amazon order so I snatched up a set of 5 powdered colorants for soap. So I've seen a couple of videos from soapmaking 101 where she mixes "some amount" of pigment/mica into the batter and magically the soap changes color. What would anyone recommend as a first try for...

Adding FO's for the first time

What about more than one? Wow, as a new soaper myself, that's a lot of information being put down. Looks like the rule of thumb is 1 oz ppo (per pound oil). I know it's not my thread, but hopefully this question is helpful: How do you figure FO when you want to use multiple scents? Do...

    Does anyone use Lard/Tallow/Vegetable Blends?

It's "Always Saving" brand. Nothing more frustrating that actually trying to search on these very common terms. Company Website where I couldn't find any information on their shortening. They list lard, tallow, and soybean oil as well as some preservatives. Looks like I'll...

    Does anyone use Lard/Tallow/Vegetable Blends?

Looking at the oil options in my local grocery last night, and I came across a Lard/Tallow/Vegetable blend tub. The ingredients state Lard, Tallow, then a list of possible vegatable oils. Has anyone found something like this to be useable? The vegetable oils seemed like they could be mixed...

Are any of you cord cutters?

Cord cutting. It's a thing! We've been off cable for about 4 years and no regrets. We do have high speed internet, which we would need for work (I'm in software) anyways. We pay about $20 total for Netflix and Hulu, and use a Roku box to serve up the channels. We also have an amazon prime...

    Really?

I can't find the write-ups I've read on this but I can shed some light on the packaging. Many companies that do a lot of shipping get a break on their shipping costs by standardizing their box sizes (especially amazon). I'ts better for a shipping company like FedEx or UPS to be able to count...

    First Soap. Fun.

Oh ya, I get it. I got no problem waiting some weeks before I break out the bars to actually use as intended. I was more curious if there was any danger to using a test piece this early to see how the soap behaves. More concerned about lye still being active and causing a reaction or...

    First Soap. Fun.

Thanks for the encouragement! So my very first soap is only 3 days old, and I find myself visiting the curing rack and giving the bars a pinch to see how they are coming along. Is there a minimum time that they must cure before use? I mean, I've read they will be better with age, but are they...

    New Soaper, Old DIYer... Hello!

So ya, most of my DIY experience is with Home improvement projects around the house. Painting, basic carpentry, tile and hardwood floors, I tend to stay indoors with my shennanigans, as outdoor projects are not my thing. I'm also a homebrewer and have made plenty of beer, which is another...

    New Soaper, Old DIYer... Hello!

Hello I've been lurking for some time, finally bit the bullet and made my first soap. Went without a hitch, thanks to all the good info here on the forums, and some great links to the YouTubes. I'm generally a DIYer and tend towards home improvement projects rather than the day-to-day...

    First Soap. Fun.

Hi all, been lurking for some time, and finally put a batch together last night. It wasn't without it's hiccups, but all in all, I made a batch big enough for 6 good sized bars. Was able to cut them this morning and now have some curing in my basement. I'll be making photogenic fishnet...
