Every day is a school day. CP castille saga.

So, getting back into soaping. Need more castille so I'll whip up a batch. Most of you will probably know this but 1000ml of olive oil is not 1000 g. (search for another bottle of O.O begins). So, things went well, I went down to 30% lye concentration, then read a bit more here and...

    Lye quality

can comment on that particular supplier but I recently open 2 bottles (purchased from B&Q hardware shop UK) and one was nice and white but the other was greyish and had a couple of odd floaters in it. Im wondering if it's sold as drain cleaner then they don't worry about how clean it is! Just...

Lowest temp I can soap at reasonably

Hi folks. a couple of the soaps I've tried have kind of gone a little too firm a little too quickly. I'm aiming at lye about 100F and oils about 110F. Am I way off or can I go lower. I read references to 'room temp' soaping. That's about 68F so can I go that low. Obviously looking to slow...

A little disaster I think HP Shave soap.

That's great thanks. Just some extra curing due to the water content!!!!!

A little disaster I think HP Shave soap.

Thanks. The glycerine is in. Maybe I should have warmed it up first. Kept heating but nothing. Added a bit extra water (not in recipe) but it seemed to get thicker!! 45% SA. 25% CO. 20% Deer tallow. 5% Lanolin 2.5% Shea. 2.5% Avacado KOH 229g Water 465g. 1000g oils in total. I kept half the...

A little disaster I think HP Shave soap.

Cheers. I did let it heat. I added more water (panic stations) and it just seemed to get harder. Ah wel, it's in the mold and tastes like soap!! I used a potato masher and it was still hard work to get the S/F blended.

A little disaster I think HP Shave soap.

Well it was all going fine. A double batch trying a new lye calc. to make superfatting easier. The cook looked great and better than before (more water I think) and then I happened. My brain caught up and I had forgotten to add the GLYCERINE. Ah well, what's the worst than could...

    Trying to make beer syrup

I got an explosive beer from a friend who has his own brewery (great frined indeed). When you pour the beer you get a half pint of head. I boiled down 2 pints into 2 tablespoon. It will eventually got thick like treacle I think.

EFG. Thanks, I think I did that playing with soapcalc. (but not for this recipe or the first batch- which is fantastic)

Recipe help re keeping oils out for S/F (HP)

Thanks DeeAnna, I can work things out from there. I checked soapcal with my above proposal and it only added less than a gramme of lye extra!!

Recipe help re keeping oils out for S/F (HP)

So, take off the reserved oils from the calculation and set the superfat in soap calc to zero. All the lye and oils are reacted and the remaining oils then added are superfat. Add them at 5% of the weight of oils used. Did I get that right....please..... Is it not a wee bitty dangerous to...
