    Castor Oil Substitution

Thanks! I just wanted to thank Relle, Hazel and JustBeachy! It's so much more helpful for a beginner to get anything other than a straightforward, helpful and informative response that might have gone something like this, "I understand you're new to soaping, but you should cure your salt bars...

    Castor Oil Substitution

Follow up on my first salt bars - THANKS I'll be darned but I sold each and every one (except the one I'm using myself) even though they were "damaged". My customer said, "I don't care!" Well, okay! So I just labeled them "Chunky Salt Bars". Thanks to everyone who helped me through! Now I'm...

    Help with recipe - PLEASE!!!

I just want to thank everyone for giving all us newbies out here such good info. I like the Brambleberry calculator, but really want to come up with my own recipes so knowing about the other calculator that "predicts" the soap quality outcome is critical info to me. I didn't know it was out...

    Castor Oil Substitution

Another question about salt soap LOL. I thought, "Rather than wait 24 hours before unmolding - because it's a salt soap and will crumble when I cut it, I'll unmold and cut in 12 hours. Aren't I smart?" Of course it crumbled. So I'm going to try it again today or tomorrow and cut it in about...

    Castor Oil Substitution

I did it. I used 50% salt ppo (ha! I know what that means now ) or, rather, I got to the end, started filling the mold and realized - and I hope this happens to other people - I had forgotten to add the salt. I regrouped fast and got the salt in though, lol. This is my third CP attempt...

    Castor Oil Substitution

Another question: I can use up to 100% of oil weight in salt bars, but am wondering what the benefits are for less v. more salt. I'm thinking, for one, less salt (say 50%) would make the soap batter easier to deal with, right? wrong? But what about advantages to the skin?

    Castor Oil Substitution

Thanks! I'll give it a try . But here's a "newbie question" - - what does "ppo" stand for? WAIT! I googled it and the BEST list (from this site) of acronyms for soaping came up! "Per pound of oil" Excellent!

    Un-ethical

Just because something is legal doesn't make it right (or ethical!). Now if we can just get lawyers to think that way, too! Sorry this happened to you, Carolyn. Thanks for sharing your story.

    Castor Oil Substitution

Sounds interesting! I'm new to soaping, so I've never heard of adding sugar to lye water. What does adding sugar to the water do? And what % should I add?

    Castor Oil Substitution

I'm hoping to make a salt soap soon (say that really fast :) ) and was wondering if there is a good substitute for castor oil. Thanks! I've been trying to find a silicone mold that is about 10" long x about 4" tall and 2.5" wide. The reason is I want thinner soaps but still want to add...

    Disaster need help!

I like a few suppliers, and here are the ones I use now: Nature's Garden has nice soap bases and the prices are good. There are shipping costs of course, but they ship quickly and have good customer service. Bramble Berry has excellent bases. The cost is only a little bit higher, but they...

    fruit oil suggestions?

Another vote for Lemongrass here. It's one of my favorites and everyone seems to like it a lot - even a few "tough guys". I made a "Sweet 13" soap bar for my granddaughter's birthday with Tangerine Dreams from Nature's Garden. Smells wonderful and is perfect for young people. It seemed to...

If at first you don't succeed

I like them very much! Being new to soaping myself, I understand the problems with MP soap. It has its advantages, but has DEFINITE limitations - - at least for me. Congrats on your first bars. They're lovely!

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

Strange smell Identified As some of you suggested, it was the Bamboo scent that was causing the weird smell. That, of course, is easy enough to correct. I'm glad it was so simple! I used a different scent entirely and no odd scent. Thanks everyone.

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

I saw this update and THANKS for clarifying! :). I might have tried the gel!

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

I'll try that. Good advice. I've had trouble with Bamboo FOs being "too much" or "too little" when trying to correct the amounts. I'll try Aloe Vera!

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

I'll keep an eye (or, nose) out for that. I have some BTMS but didn't use it for this. Thanks!

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

More info I'm using very fresh oils and mango butter. I forgot to mention mango in my first post. Here's what's in it: Safflower Oil Meadowfoam Oil Rice bran Oil Mango Butter Emulsifying Wax - Traditional Stearic Acid The sugar I used, which I won't use again unless I want more of...

Funky Scent in Emulsified Sugar Scrub

I'm new to all this, so most of what I do is still very experimental. I'm having a problem with scrubs (sugar and salt). First, I made an emulsified sugar scrub and used Bamboo Hemp FO which smelled horrible (very sour), so I tried to save it by adding Brambleberry's "Soapy Clean" FO to...
