    Help with ombre, please

Dagnabbit. Is there a way to get very even layers in an ombre? Or should I end-run around the issue by using a bleeding colorant? Are pigments bleeders? I used BB Queen's Purple mica and traced it very thick, but got wavy lumps throughout. Too thin and the layers break through. This is my...

    NY Times misinformative on soap

Has anyone seen this? Full of incomplete or downright misleading information. I know a fluffy feature article isn't going to have the nuts and bolts of soapmaking, but I'd love to know how to send students home with a bar of just-poured CP. And as for, "You can use anything in your spice...

Fatty beige layer on colored soap

BB's Queen's Purple Mica. It's fine inside, except for the ends, but what in this green and holy land is that lardy schmutz on top?!?! Any help troubleshooting this dog would be appreciated. Oh, p.s. It's not ash. It doesn't wash off. I shall have to plane it off.

Yes, another "How's my label?" thread

But I just don't know. I love the logo, but graphic designers don't seem to understand soapers' needs. A round logo seems kind of difficult to work with unless I switched to square tags instead of rectangular labels, in which case there may not be enough room for Name of soap, Announcement that...

    Free lard and tallow

DISCLAIMER: SMF is not responsible for any sale, trade, co-op, pre-buy, fast buy, garage sale, ad or other transactions between members. All parties enter into transactions at their own will/risk. Howdy, soapers! I am moving and cannot afford to ship 25 pounds each of lard and tallow; it's...

    Nerdgirl fan soaps

A hundred geek points if you can guess the characters. The black and white ones are soleseife, my new favorite thing to make.

    Soaping in the media

Sorry, mods, if this thread is invalid, but I think it goes to the perception of soapmaking, its process and its safety among the general public. And those are things we should protect and defend. There's Fight Club—burning yourself with lye is badazz!—Orange Is the New Black, which, look, I...

    Hazelnut milk trio

Inspired by the alternative liquid swap. I made "milk" from the little suckers (a gift from an Oregon hazelnut farmer) and tried to get a rustic, old-fashioned look/scent combo. Rough Honey, Turkish Mocha, Teakwood & Cardamom

    Name? Scent? What to do?

Hiya, soapers. I'm working with a new designer for my labels but the problem is, I have some soaps that have clever names that don't make dazzling clear which scents I used (Penny Farthing, Ballerina, Voodoo), and some that kind of are what they are (Cranberry Crush, Lavender Honey, Rosemary)...

    creepy crust on top?

I couldn't find reference to this phenomenon anywhere in the forums, but I have a "crust" problem. The recipe was 80% lard and 20% coconut oil, superfatted at 8%. I used BB's sample of Crisp Cotton and NG's Ruby Red Grapefruit and made a three-layer silicone loaf with Mad Oil's Disco Pink and...

    Lost my darling furbaby tonight

I'm sorry if this is too off-topic to even be in the off topic section but after four months of not eating, despite all my efforts, the tests, the ultrasounds, the X-ryas, blood tests, fresh raw salmon, my angel Tiki the wondercat has passed. I'm heartbroken tonight. When my little crazy...

How do these behave in CP?

Sorry for the vague thread title, but I started out with the gateway drug, melt and pour, and had some bad experiences with some of my favorite real-life scents. Ginger scorched so badly in the hot soap I dumped the whole bottle before I figured out it was a temperature issue. The other one I...

    It pays to be generous

I wanted to mention here how much throwing in a lagniappe has helped my business. I always toss in a sample soap or a lip balm or solid lotion as a thank-you to my buyers. Some are butt ends; some are perfect; some are tiny size. And most come to nothing. But out of the extras I've tossed in a...

    Fresh avocado soap

I want to make a very gentle baby soap with avocado pulp, not avocado oil, which I can't afford. Do I have to take into consideration the oil content and if so, how? Soapcalc does not offer a SAP value for avocado pulp but I don't want to risk an oil-heavy or DOS-prone soap. Any advice would be...

    newbie fights with trace

I've making CP for about a year now and am still trace-challenged. From my observation, once your batter has emulsified, you can continue to beat it into any density of trace desired, correct? But it will continue to thicken even if you're not standing over it burning out your stickblend motor...

    Disturbing changes in U.S. policy

You guys! This just in on the Soapqueen blog. I didn't see it addressed elsewhere in the forum. Here is the relevant bit about potential changes in the FDA's Food Drug, and Cosmetics Act and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. These proposals addressed issues such as new registration...

    Pigments gone wild

This is not purple. I used BB's Ultraviolet Blue and Ultramarine Violet and got this greenish-yellow mess. Forgive the texture. I cut it too soon so I could take a picture. I have only read glowing reviews of how these pigments mix and color so I have no idea why the color didn't take. Any...

    Celine swirl

I wanted to do a pretty two-color swirl, and found the fabulous Celine swirl online. She is very talented. After some Googling and links, I saw many posters saying it was harder than she made it look, but I found it very easy. The yellowy part of the soap is actually quite white IRL--the light...
