Emu oil and mango butter are both supposed to have scar reductive properties.

    No Lauric acid soap

I was thinking of making a non lauric acid soap using mango seed butter and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I also plan on using neem and lard to help firm it up. My question is that of course leaving out LA oils it leaves the recipe with almost 0 bubbly and...

    Flavoring oil question

Most of the flavors are just molecules that mimic said flavor or fragrance, these are all trade secrets. Most these chemicals aren't properly named and are just referred to using their chemical makeup, such as butanedione or also referred to as diacetyl, which is used as a artificial butter...

Salt bars...what size of salt grain do I get???

If the salt is too coarse just run it through a coffee grinder and you can get powdered salt this way if your so inclined.

What other hobbies and homemade goodies do you make?

I've grown just about every kind of mushroom that you can grow indoors. Shiitake are awesome but they do best on full logs you can grow on woodchip/sawdust but it's more difficult. Button/portobello mushrooms are foul if you ask me I just hate the flavor and the substrates are REALLY unpleasant...

    Summertime/Camper Soap Ideas

Planning a insect repelling soap and since I'm just a hobbyist I don't mind sharing my ideas. I plan on using at least 20% neem oil since it's a very good insect repellant and 10% castor since it's supposed to be one as well. EO's I was thinking pine, lemon grass, tea tree, cedar, peppermint and...

    First Neem Soap

Wow grayce that must be a anti bug soap you have based on the ingredients, I will have to try making something similar for camping. I've really wanted to make some anti bug neem soaps but I haven't quite settled on EO's yet.

    Soapwort or Soapnuts

What I would really love to do one day is make a liquid soap using soap nuts, soapwort, soap lily and soap tree root. Sadly you really can't find soaptree root anywhere for sale which means I would have to grow one myself and I haven't found soap lily anywhere either.

Does homemade soap disinfect at all ??

If your looking for label appeal some EO's have a better antibiotic ability then triclosan does. Tea tree, lemon, clove and oregano all exhibit antibaterial qualities that are much stronger then triclosan mosty because of it's overuse. Now since soap washes the bacteria off it doesn't matter...

    Soapwort or Soapnuts

I've got TONS of soapwort I plan on making some soap with it this weekend, I'll make a comparison batch so it'll give a better idea of the effect. Careful planting this particular plant in your garden as it's VERY invasive, on the plus side it attracts butterflies and humming birds.

    The Antisoap

Grapeseed/Castor should be a awesome combo for oil cleansing due to high amounts of Ricinoleic acid in the castor which has anti-inflammitory and analgesic effects and grape seed which has Linoleic acid which has anti-inflammatory, acne reductive, and moisture retentive properties. You could add...

    The Antisoap

Well let's look at a some EO's for helping with acne as well. Rose oil helps inflammation also oregano, nutmeg, lemon grass, dill and peppermint. Antibacterial oils include Neem, Tea tree, peppermint, oregano and thyme. Witch hazel and cypress oil might also be good to reduce the blood flow to...

    Body powder too grainy

My guess would be the rice flour or baking soda if it was a cheap brand. You can try running it through a coffee grinder to reduce the particle size and make less grainy.

    Soapwort

Thank you susie and elm what I found was roughly the same, boil small pieces of root in hot water fresh seems best but can be dried as well. If using fresh leaves use a rolling pin to break down the leaves a bit. Careful planting the stuff it's pretty invasive.

    Soapwort

So it's spring again which means the obnoxious soapwort is starting to pop up again. Luckily this year I have a use for it now that I am soaping. So can anyone clear up how I use the stuff. Should I use the root or the leaves? Should I dry the plant matter or use it fresh? Should I make it into...

    Lye Fumes

The reason the vapor is so nasty is because it's a aqueous solution of naoh, basically your inhaling lye water which of course is a irritant.

Bite marks on my soap, could it be rat?

Definitely a rat considering the peppermint was untouched which is a natural rodent repellant.

What's the benefit of tea in your soap?

Well polyphenols are similar to tannins which can impart color to soaps like picture a few posts up so obviously tannins can survive the highly basic environment. One thing I did find out is that polyphenols can bind proteins and become unavailable unless exposed to a acid. So it may be a bad...

What's the benefit of tea in your soap?

So I started to do a little research on polyphenols and I think that they could cause a effect since it seems to have a low therapeutic threshold in the mg level. The real question is can it survive saponification, sadly I'm not a chemist so I can't answer it. Tannins in tea seem to sometimes...
