How long of a test period for lotions?

Thank you :) (I have read that post previously and I'm all squared away with legalities, tax ID, insurance, accountant etc.) I did use a preservative and an emulsifying wax and followed the % rates outlined by the manufacturer for both. I kept everything sanitized with alcohol during the...

How long of a test period for lotions?

I've finally come up with a recipe that I'm happy with for whipped, emulsified body butter (so "body whip" or whatever you want to call it lol). How long did you wait after making your first lotion before you were confident that it was stable and had a decent shelf life before selling it (I...

    Lip Balm Filling trays

I wrap a bunch of tubes in a rubber band to get them to all stand up steadily while filling/cooling, works perfectly. I use a plastic, disposable pipette to fill them.

    Patchouli EO

Thanks for that info! That's actually really nice, I wish all the suppliers would do something like that.

    Patchouli EO

Thanks :) I always forget about WSP lol and they seem to have the best price for it that I've seen so far.

    Patchouli EO

Who is your favorite supplier of Patchouli EO? I love Essential Depot's, but it is really expensive ($30/oz. ) and I use patch in a LOT of blends. I also have a few customers who want a straight patchouli soap, not happening with ED's. I'm about to start a search for a supplier with a...

Looking for a new business name

I really like this one for you (provided it's not already taken). Keeping the word salt in there will help your current customers remember the new name and it does, to me, go along with what you're trying to convey. I took a long time to come up with a name. I basically did what was suggested...

    Question about taxes and COGS

Oy, this makes my head spin. I have a meeting with an accountant next week to go over all this so I know what I'm doing and do it right. Question though - I'm considering getting SM3, those who use it, is that adequate for your accounting and inventory tracking if you have to file using the COGS?

    Adding herbs, chocolate, etc

I use cocoa powder for achieving a natural looking brown color and I don't measure, I just put it into my emulsified batter (don't wait until trace because you will have to stick blend for a good bit to get the powder to not be clumpy) a little at a time until I get the color brown I want, no...

    Summertime/Camper Soap Ideas

Oh wow, well that's good to know - no anise in "camper's soap" lol. I was planning on making one for camping by replacing all water with aloe juice (to relieve any sunburn), jewelweed to help prevent poison ivy, and citronella EO to repel bugs.

Business start up questions - in PA

Thank you for this! We did file for an EIN as a general partnership and sent out the form and fee for our "fictitious name" (DBA) registration with our state. As soon as we get that back we'll sign up for insurance and get our sales tax ID #. I have kept track of everything we've purchased so...

    Soaps are very drying

What was your recipe? You need the right balance of oils for a soap to not be drying.

Percentage, PPO, and other math musings...

See, this has confused me about BB. They say that they calculate FO usage rates based on total weight of soap, including lye solution volume, and with their calculator they mean for you to put in the total soap weight. How they can figure it that way though, I don't get. If you just put your...

You see a crack starting...what would you do?

That's exactly what I've learned to do, I actually check the loaf every hour or so for the first few hours after it's made to check for excess heat, this one just happened to heat up quick on me in between checking on it. :-P

You see a crack starting...what would you do?

That was how I was thinking. First time I ever had a FO do that to me, so my snap decision was cool it down before it really overheated. I was able to fix the crack with alcohol before I put it in the freezer though. Crazy how a FO can do that with no insulation or CPOP, not even any covering...

You see a crack starting...what would you do?

So, two days ago I made a soap I was SO happy with, 5 colors layered, great scent blend.... About 2 hours after it's in the mold, I check on it an there's a lovely crack starting in the middle and the bottom of the mold was hot (vs. the warm I usually have). I quickly decided to pop it in the...

What is on the top of this soap?

They really do seem like salt deposits and yes, I was able to wipe them off. Technically, that's what ash is, right? Salt? The white specks actually showed up before the wet spots had dried up or reabsorbed (whichever they did). So, after 24 hours I had soap with wet spots and white specks :???: lol

What is on the top of this soap?

Thanks. I do think it must be ash, it just looks very different that other times that I've gotten ash. Maybe that's because of the alcohol I sprayed on it. I just cut it and cleaned up the bars and it turned out great, the inside and sides of the soap seems perfectly normal. I was just...
