    Introduction and Castile paste

Hi All, back again! It took forever to get around to it but tomorrow I'm finally going to make my third batch of Beldi. Technically I can't call it Beldi anymore because I'm not following a traditional recipe and I'm not adding any olive meat. I'm also going to add a preservative since I had...

    Introduction and Castile paste

You know what .. I just remembered. I didn't make batch #2 identical to batch #1. Batch #2 had actual black olive pulp in it because I was trying to match that really dark version I saw the plasterers using and someone from Morocco told me their soap had pulp included in it. I am about to...

    Introduction and Castile paste

Hi all .. I've been away from the list for ages and hardly making any soap but once in a while I still churn out a batch or two. I wanted to reopen this old thread and show you some photos of this paste soap and how it all worked out. In 2013 I wanted to reverse engineer this soap based on...

    Lanolin Wool Wash Bar Soap

Coming in very late on this thread because I was searching for something and now you have me thinking .. How on earth are you only doubling the yarn on the soles if you're in the round? Are you talking entire sole or just the heel? My head is trying to understand because all I can see is the...

    Lanolin Saponification or Not?

Haven't posted in ages because I haven't been making soap but today someone knitty gave me a jar of lanolin water. They were washing fleeces and after filtering out the dirt, this is the water left over and it's lovely full of lanolin. I was thinking to make a batch of soap with it but have no...

    my great grandmother's soap recipe

I found this while cleaning out boxes of old photos .. My Great Grandmother lived in St. Hippolyte, Saskatchewan, Canada and this is translated from French. The year was 1909 "We had a 3 year old sow and she raised quite a few litters of pigs. When we butchered her she was dressed at 830...

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Finally got the last of the soap poured today. Pupils are in and the Minions are technically done now except for curing and planing! WHEW! It's been an adventure. These pics are with iris's poured (chocolate brown eyes, using cocoa for colour) They started off looking poo brown which...

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Thanks Bou .. I was raised in the era of sharing information freely so that all might learn. I'm tired of this new era where everyone wants to charge a dime for their 2 cents worth of knowledge.

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Sorry folks .. life has thrown me another curve ball *sighs* . My husband has been experiencing mental illness that exhausts me and keeps me from doing much beyond his care. Once again the minions are on the shelf but with Grace, medication and rest for him I hope I'll have the time to get...

Does 2.5% REALLY make a difference?

Has anyone opened their NY Eve Castile?

Interesting to read the various responses. I wrapped all of mine in paper towel. Basically I treated them identical, the only difference was the recipe and the molds. Disappointing is the best description, especially after such a long wait.

Has anyone opened their NY Eve Castile?

With New Year's Eve creeping up I was curious about mine and opened them up I made two batches .. a 30% water/ 5% SF batch poured into 2" pvc pipes, and then because they took so long to dry enough to cut I tried a 20% water/ 2% SF poured into round cavity silicone. The 20% water batch all...

    Potato soap update

I might have cheated on mine. I dissolved my lye in 1:1 plain water and just added another 1.5 of potato water to my oils. Seems to work with oatmilk so figured it would work with potato water. 12 large rounds swirled with yellow oxide .. and a few little potato men (Mr. Potato heads?) left...

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Today .. irises poured using powdered cocoa to get a brown colour .. it's supposed to lighten with curing *crosses fingers* The final steps will be to drill again for black pupils and then plane the soaps when cured. ETA: You can see how much they've shrunk in the past months if you notice...

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Goggles poured rubber stops removed, straps carved out and Minions in another mold for next pouring A view in the long mold with straps and eyes poured. This mold is just 1" styrofoam cut to shape, pinned in place with nails and lined with parchment paper. Drilling out the irises. I...

    Gent's Minion Challenge

Alright .. here's the photo diary of the Minions The plan and one of the molds I used .. instant oatmeal cereal box I used a cardboard insert in my silicone mold and poured the pants first. Sorry but the photo doesn't show the cardboard shaping for the pants well. I poured the pants upside...

    Potato soap update

Potato soap on the menu for today. I saved the water from last night's potato and was thinking I would throw in some of the leftovers but realized at the last minute that I put some Cheeze Whiz in the mash so can't add them to the soap. I guess I'll just make mine with potato water.

    Gent's Minion Challenge

So after a VERY, VERY long hiatus I am staring at the Minion's .. only their irises and pupils left to go but the poor things are covered in a layer of dust from sitting on the shelf so long. I've spent the whole summer renovating a bathroom and multiple other things, plus started a new job and...

    It's all so insidious

Label hell sounds like a very familiar place .. I'm sure I've been there .. in fact I'm not sure I ever got out .. it's just a Twilight Zone sort of place.
