Lye Behaving Strangely – Splitting Liquid in Goat Milk Soap

I’ve been making CP soap for over 10 years, mostly for personal use and as gifts. I especially like goat milk soap, and over the years I’ve experimented with all the usual ways of making it with the least amount of fuss and labor. I eventually settled on a procedure that has generally worked for...

    Soleseife Troubleshooting

I made my first batch of soleseife a little over a month ago. It’s curing nicely, but a white film has gradually formed over the bottoms of the bars. It doesn’t feel like the usual soda ash, it’s slippery and won’t come off using the usual methods. Besides which, I sprayed the bars (all in...

Troubleshooting: Unintentional "designs" on soap surface

P.S. Thanks, DeeAnna, for the link to the Antie Clara blog -- I find her posts very helpful but hadn't seen this one, and one of the soaps she includes looks a lot like mine. I think, as she says, there is something about the cutting, as the exterior looks totally normal. Deborah

Troubleshooting: Unintentional "designs" on soap surface

After reading your responses, I think the culprits are: 1. Too much heat; and 2. Too much water I started using the Soap Calc app and now that I'm comparing their recommendations for water:lye with my old tried-and-true MMS calculator, I'm finding that they're at the high end of the range in...

Troubleshooting: Unintentional "designs" on soap surface

Hello, all -- I'm having a weird problem with some soap batches and wondering if anyone has ideas about what's going on. Four batches out of 10 or 12, fresh from the mold -- when I cut the bars, the interior surface of the soap has "designs" on the surface, swirls that seem etched into the...

Why did my soap turn dark yellow?

It's been curing since 2/13, color is still as dark as the photo shows, so curing doesn't seem to be helping. The last time I used Oakmoss FO, the recipe included a significant amount of vegetable shortening, so maybe that kept the color more stable. The olive oil wasn't particularly green --...

Why did my soap turn dark yellow?

Yes, Carolyn Z, same supplier and even from the same bottle -- last time I did a subtle green and white swirl, no problems (photo attached). That's why I'm so stumped.

Why did my soap turn dark yellow?

But why would the top still be the original color? Only the interior turned yellow, the tops of the bars are still cream-colored.

Why did my soap turn dark yellow?

Yes, Oakmoss FO -- have never had a problem with it in the past.

Why did my soap turn dark yellow?

Any ideas on why the background color of this soap turned dark yellow? Recipe was: 16 oz. olive oil 10 oz. palm oil 10 oz. coconut oil 8 oz. canola oil 2 oz. apricot kernel oil 15 oz. distilled water 6.35 oz. sodium hydroxide 3 T. oakmoss FO Nothing added to base color of soap...
