Was checking out digital ph testers on Amazon and wondered if any are worth the money. Don't want to use strips cause they aren't reliable. Thanks.

What are good oils to use in a lotion recipe?

The majority of body lotion recipes I am finding call for jojoba oil. I have even seen some with MCT and sunflower oil. The lotion I am making I am wanting to use for mature skin and was considering using rbo instead of jojoba. Just curious what others think and what they might or might not sub.

Subbing milks for water in lotion

Can I sub real milk like goat milk for some or all of the distilled water in my lotion recipe? The recipe I have uses distilled water and goat milk powder. Haven't info on if I can sub the water for milk so thought I would ask here. If I can, I plan to use a double boiler to heat milk slowly to...

Can I sub aloe vera clear liquid for water

I have a combination lotion/body butter recipe and was wondering if I could sub the water for aloe liquid instead? Or would that alter the texture of the lotion? Also, if its okay to use it do I still need to heat and hold to kill bacteria? BTW I also have aloe X in powder form so I could put...

should I melt my grainy shea prior to making body butter?

I know its a soft butter and does not need to be melted to make whipped body butter. But its very grainy and was wondering if the graininess will whip out or do I need to melt it first then let it start to solidify before whipping it into my body butter recipe?

    Making aloe oil

I want to make my own aloe vera oil using a carrier oil and aloe gel. This will be for a bath oil I am working on. Will aloe gel mix okay with a carrier oil? I assume I need a preservative. Do I need an emulsifier or solubilizer too? I have aloe powder too but am thinking the powder will leave...

Looking for a sweet, spicy, smoky soap fragrance

I used to use MW's Autumn Embers and it was fabulous in soap. A lot of MW's FOs were duped but I haven't seen a dupe of Autumn Embers. If anyone knows of a FO that is similar I would love to try it. I have tried AH Bonfire Bliss and it is not the same or even close. Any suggestions would be...

Can I use vanilla extract in my lip balm?

I ran out of my coconut cream flavor oil and was wondering if I could sub vanilla and coconut extracts in my lip balms? I don't recall reading anywhere about using extracts so thought I should ask about it. If its okay, what % do I use?

    Sub for Sodium Lactate

I need to make some soap today and am running out of SL. I was hoping I could sub some salt instead. I do have beeswax and stearic but would rather not use those. I am using my PVC molds and just want to make sure the soap slides out of the mold. I've been using SL in my batter to help with...

    Liquid on top of paste

I just made a batch of LS about a couple of hours ago. It had already turned to paste and tested clear with the phenalthalein (sp?). I noticed a tiny bit of liquid, maybe 1/2oz in a tiny 1" puddle on top of the soap. The soap is not seperated. It went through all the stages beautifully and...

    Juniper Aloe

These are some facial bars I make with fresh pureed avocado, avocado & grapeseed oils. I use EBB's Juniper Aloe. It stays fluid for a while then suddenly accelerates so I have to work fast. But they are worth it because the fragrance is beautiful! In the mold and fresh cut pics.

    Busy week of soapmaking

I've been busy making soaps for some upcoming shows. This past week I made about 260 soaps and I still have a long way to go. In order of pics: pink sugar, honeysuckle pear, fire goddess, lavender chamomile, lemon verbena, lavender cotton, pink grapefruit, ginger lime scrub (a rebatch save...

    Shampoo video from

One of the reasons I wanted to learn to make ls was so I could eventually make liquid shampoo soap. However after reading some of the threads about ls being too harsh I am looking for ways to make it and found this video: Is this something I can do? I assume I would...

Getting gummy bear stage not molasses

I just started making LS. I have made 2 batches so far using Irishlass's recipe and technique. Everything is fine up to the point I get the "flying bubbles" after SBing my lye solution and oils together. But instead of it getting to the 'thick molasses' stage I get a sudden and thick hard gummy...

    Lumpy Coconut Milk Revisited

I brought this subject back up because of an experience I just had today with lumpy coconut milk. I have used canned coconut milk for years and yes it does have fat clumps in it but nothing like what I experienced today. I have always used it with no problems but today was definitely different...

    Grapefruit & Lemongrass

This is round 2 of my sunflower oil soap. I revised the recipe a bit. I am also practicing this swirl and this recipe is great for this particular swirl. Its supposed to produce 'blossom' like swirls. The scent combo is my own. Its a blend of FOs and EOs and I wish this forum had scratch and...

    Sunflower & Soy

This is my sunflower and soybean oil soap. I am experimenting with these oils as they are not ones I traditionally use in soapmaking. I scented it with Daffodil FO and it smells just like spring!

    Egyptian Dragon

I CP'd this yesterday on Memorial Day. Its a blend of SS Egyptian Dragon and CS Egyptian Amber. I smells lovely! The colors are ultramarie blue for the lapis lazuli and turmeric for the golden yellow. The colors faded somewhat but are still there thank goodness!
