Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Thank you - I bought some & it makes terrific soap. But from now on (after I use up the can) I will be going palm free. They got to me.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

Kevin Dunn has written several articles which have been posted on the Internet about this issue. They were very informative. Thanks for all your answers, as always.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

It had nothing to do with not "liking" an answer. I didn't understand something, and thus decided to solicit other opinions.

Canola - Does it Cause DOS or Not?

I've heard so many bad things about Canola causing DOS but I am skeptical. It's just an oil with a certain FA profile & should not cause DOS of itself. Perhaps the oil was rancid to begin with, or on the way to rancidity...? I do not know. What are people's experiences w/Canola. There is a...

Getting Started Without Spending a Ton of Money

Thanks! I started a thread about neats foot and in the process learned that it ain't worth the bother. And that's another thing about soaping - you learn a variety of ancillary skills that you never thought you would learn.

Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Many thanks - that's what I thought but wasn't sure.

Spectrum Vegetable Shortening - How to Calculate

Should I calculate it as regular palm oil, or as Crisco with palm oil? The two yield different results from Soap Calc.

    Problem with Castile soap

They do look wonderful. Thank you! Anyway I think I get the point - the batter must be thin enough to pour, thick enough to support a layer on top. Another soaper spoons the layers on, rather than pouring over a spatula.

Poll: What is your favourite soap shape?

My favorite shape is the last one I've seen! I mean it - every time I see a new beautiful soap, I say, "that's my favorite." I never would have thought to like big soap cubes, but I saw a pic (on this forum) and I thought it was gorgeous. Maybe not that utilitarian - I have somewhat small...

    Problem with Castile soap

Thank you Earlene. The Youtube video in the 1st link was very educational. I figured the process out after my own failure but it still helps to see it. Only I would probably do lightest first, and add color as I go along, because I don't have lots of equipment and I'll be pouring from the...

    Problem with Castile soap

Right - but it still has to be thick enough to create a true layer. I attempted to layer my last batch. I wanted to make an ice cream sandwich with chocolate layers on the top and bottom and vanilla in the middle. My trace was so thin, it was laughable, an utter failure. So I just mixed it all...

    Problem with Castile soap

That particular piece of advice is a godsend. A lot of beginner soapers are just SCARED. I speak from personal experience. They think that it's all got to be done quickly or the whole thing will mysteriously destroy itself. I know I did. I've done four batches, all with very thin trace, and...

    Stearic Acid in CP

Why not melt the beeswax & add the cold oils, which will warm them up?

Looking for beeswax and tallow suggestions..

I have mostly soft oils on hand and don't want to buy new stuff right now. I do have beeswax. Do you think that adding 5% to OO/Castor/Coconut will make too thick a trace? (Yes, I know that Coconut is technically hard but it's not tallow hard). I want to experiment with my first layered soap so...

    CP: Does temperature matter? (lye/oils)

I know what CPOP is but what is the purpose of it? Oops, sorry - just read Irish Lass above & it was explained.

    Making a wooden soap mold

I haven't worked with it personally so can't say from experience, but it's supposed to be better than regular cling wrap. It's supposed to adhere to the sides of whatever you stick it to without wrinkling. What I was wondering about is that it's made of plastic, soap gets hot, will it melt the...

    Making a wooden soap mold

What do people here think about lining molds in Stretch-Tite? My stock of freezer paper is almost out and there is no reason for me to buy more other than to line molds. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0195R5YSQ/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 Will the heat of the saponification process be a problem?

    How Reliable Is Soap Calc?

I ran peanut oil thru Soap Calc (which I do trust for the most part) and it's high in oleic acid. Seems to be a pattern. I don't understand the difference between the "behaviors" of the various fatty acids. To me, an FO is an FO is an FO, but I have a lot to learn.
