    Vanilla Stabilizer Affecting Unmolding Time?

The brand I'm using is Crafter's Choice (via Candora Soap located in Ontario, Canada). Here's the link to the product: Crafters Choice™ Vanilla Colour Stabilizer (CP) Candora Soap I've used the VS with different FO's at a rate from 3% to 6%. Vanillin content has ranged from 0.7% to 6%. The most...

    Vanilla Stabilizer Affecting Unmolding Time?

I tried searching for this on the forum but came up short. Does anyone else find that vanilla stabilizer affects their unmolding time? This is my first time doing a lot of "Christmas" scents so this is the most I've used stabilizer at one given time. I'm noticing all my batches with the VS (in...

Master Batch Lye - Quantities Help

Okay, thanks guys. This is super helpful. I always assumed that it should equal up but when I actually weighed the lye water solution this past weekend it was off by like 20g. I then assumed that it does not add up (for some strange, chemistry reason I was unaware of)...but perhaps I was off in...

Master Batch Lye - Quantities Help

I'd like to start master batching my lye to save time for each batch. I understand most but I can't seem to figure out how you determine the quantity per batch when everything is already pre-mixed at my desired rate (33% in my case). I've noticed that my water weight plus lye weight does not...

    Is this false tracinig?

This video has been posted on the forum and it's the BEST I've seen for explaining false trace and how to spot it. It's definitely possible to have "emulsified looking" batter without actually having trace - especially while using cooler oils. Happened to me with one of my latest batches but I...

    Amount of TD in Water?

When using oil dispersed TD I find that mixing with SB directly into oil is the only way to ensure fully incorporating it in. I use about 1tsp PPO, so for my 2lbs loaves it would be 2tsp to make the whole thing white. Won't get any glycerine rivers, etc. When using water dispersed TD I mix with...

    SMF June 2020 Un-Challenge - Half & Half

Oh god of course I made that typo! I’m blaming the crazy business and not my lack of proof reading hahahhaha

    SMF June 2020 Un-Challenge - Half & Half

I decided to get a bunch of new batches done while I had the time last week. And thankfully I did - this week has been so hectic and busy I almost forgot to post them here! The first is scented with black cherry merlot and has a half top of bath mix (I know, I know, I hate it in the shower too...

    Ugh! Is this DOS?

Thanks, all! Lack of blending (specifically the FO as @shunt2011 mentioned) is a strong possibility. These were new-to-me FOs and I was probably worried about acceleration so may have under blended after coming to emulsion.

    Ugh! Is this DOS?

Oh thank god! I love that watermelon soap way too much to have to can it! DOS is such a huge fear of mine. I think I’m making myself paranoid. Thank you @Misschief !!!!!

    Ugh! Is this DOS?

I’m wondering if I have DOS on some areas of two batches of soap that I unmolded and cut on June 4. On the red/pink/yellow swirl soap I’m seeing some discolouration on the tops that almost look like rust puddles. But I’m wondering if this could be due to a weird mixing of the red and yellow...

Discolouration due to vanilla content in FO

Thanks all! Usually I follow what the supplier (or reviews) say but I got two new sample sizes in yesterday that only state the vanilla % on the site/bottle and none of the reviews speak to discolouration yet. So I was hoping for some trick while I test them out. They are both under 2% so I...

Discolouration due to vanilla content in FO

Does anyone know of a good "rule of thumb" for discolouration due to vanilla content? For example, if the FO has less than 1% vanilla content will it typically discolour to a light tan, whereas up to 3% goes medium brown, etc. I'm trying to determine in which instances I can skip the...

    Fragrance oil

I also assume the percentage as % of total oils. I try not to buy anything under 4% usage (preferably 6% though) and when testing new scents with a lower % I start with a 30ml sample size to see how it performs before committing to a larger volume.

    Help!

I used to get rivers when I started as well. I found that soaping at a lower temp (90-100) and using a lye concentration of 33% took care of the issue for me. I've also become lighter handed on my TD (and mica/colourant in general) use which I'm sure has helped as well. All my batches still...

    What’s this discolouration?

Thank you @DeeAnna !! I definitely poured and then scraped the sides

    What’s this discolouration?

Just cut this loaf. The recipe is the same I always use with familiar EOs, but there’s some odd discolouration (the lighter areas) on some bars, and only in the yellow (which was the top in the mold) later. Any ideas at what causes this? Hopefully it’s just appearance and doesn’t mean the lye...
