    Why is this so fascinating?

Hi, Why is soapmaking so fascinating? Soap is just a product with which i clean things with. But in the month's time since i began, i have already made enough soap for an entire year! What are your thoughts on this?

    Selective superfatting

Hi, After searching the forum i have not yet found info on this, what is call 'selective superfatting'. Let's say i were to make a soap with 40% coconut oil, 40% lard and a 20% specialty oil lik shea butter, with a superfat of 5%. Would it be a good idea to saponify the coconut oil and lard to...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Good one! Thanks! Thank you, i will also give food coloring a try. I have lived in Holland for quite a while and i also got used to being able to order anything online and get it delivered at my home the next day. I really miss that! Oh well, at least where ilive now i have nice weather every...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Thank you for your suggestion PenelopeJane, but i live on an island, not everything is available here. So i have to be resourceful and work with what i have. And we're talking about only 1/8th of a teaspoon of bluing product PPO. That is 1/10th of a teaspoon of baking soda PPO (estimate)...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

So the test results are in. First, i mixed some of the Crown Blue with some vinegar, and it fizzed, indicating that it does quite probably contain sodium carbo..i mean BIcarbonate :p @DeeAnna. After that i powderized some of it in my mini mortar and pestle. After checking roughly the amount...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Thanks for pointing that out DeeAnna, i almost finished the academic study for pharmacist (i became a lawyer instead) but the name bicarbonate never made sense to me as there is only one (bi)carbonate ion for every sodium ion. So i stubbornly keep calling it sodium carbonate. In my opinion...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Exactly. I might be needing a slightly higher superfat. But first i am going to find out how much of it is needed to achieve the desired color intensity. Who knows, maybe only a very small amount is needed to achieve the desired color intensity. If that is the case, then the effect of the sodium...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

I'm pretty sure it is not copper sulfate because it stayed in solution after i added lye. If it were copper sulfate, a copper hydroxide precipitate would have formed. But thank you for your concern!

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Thank you Millie, About the voodoo part, i live on the island of Curaçao, it's an island in the caribbean sea and it is part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. The local people are quite superstitious, and these small blue cubes play a part in this. The most well-known superstitious use is on...

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Thank you for the reply Carolyn. Purple will be no problem as it will be a lavender scented soap. I also do not think it is unsafe, it is intended to be used on human clothing after all. I guess i will just try it out this weekend. I will report the results back.

    Reckitt's Crown Blue

Hi there, I'm new to this forum, came here for a question. I want to make blue colored soap. The problem is that the usual blue colorants are not available where i live. I did find small blocks of Reckitt's Crown Blue, normally used to make white clothes whiter while laundering (see attachment)...
