Reading all these posts has got me thinking I'd like to try an avocado soap. What would you scent it with though or do you scent it at all? The cucumber puree would be great for the colour but wouldn't you need grapefruit seed extract as a preservative when adding cucumber and avocado puree...
That's great! I think I've been on their website though and I don't think they ship to Canada...
I've been buying my base from CANWAX because they're close by but the base doesn't have a lot of lather.
Re: Hey
Did you try it out Cindy? I've got a batch of soap scented with a sandalwood EO mix. I put shea butter, stearic acid and kaolin clay in it but it hardly had ANY lather at all!! I was thinking of remelting and adding the sugar and a bit more EO to make up for it being reheated.
I'm just a newbie to this but my soap making book had a great idea for clean up. I just used some old rags to wipe everything off, then washed my pots and utensils in the sink. For the rags I put them in a plastic bag, let them sit for a couple of days for the raw soap to saponify and then...
I was going to give it a go last week-end but realized I didn't have nearly enough bergamot and sandalwood EO's to do the job. I've only done one batch of CP before so I'm starting to realize just how pricey using EO's in CP can be. I'm going to have to try and find a one pound batch recipe...
Excellent! Now I know what to use to get that brown colour in my soap. Thanks everyone.
Lil Outlaws, That magenta colour sounds interesting. Did you ever take pictures?
Anyone ever try this? I'm looking to get a tan colour in my soap. I want to used the scent Manly Man from the EO blend page and I want to use a natural colourant in it. I've been checking out some web pages. I saw one soap where they claimed they used green tea infused water. The soap was...
I would like to use fragrance oils because they are cheaper and you can get loads of different scents BUT amost all of the FO gives me a headache and makes me feel sick. My nose actually gets turned off and the fragrance over time just smells like a chemical to me. So I just stick with EO's
I forgot to mention, too , that I was working with crystals instead of flakes as Kellistarr asked. It would be nice to get flakes for the next time but now I've already got an open container of lye crystals so I suppose it should be used up.
Wow, thanks for all the words of wisdom and support. It certainly helps knowing what happened to try to avoid it in the future. I was wearing FLEECE as well!!!!!! There was nothing in the books to warn about that.
Yes, I did have an open window and ititally a fan on to direct the fumes when I mixed up the lye outside. I turned the fan off as soon as I tried to open the container and the lye was moving up and out of the container but it continued to do so. Now I realize it had to do with the open window...
Thanks Tanya. It will probably get me by while I'm trying to find that perfect recipe. I didn't realize it would be such a challenge. It's good most of the batches are tiny (3-5 oz) because I've wasted oils on the last 3 batches.
I finally got the nerve up yesterday and made my first batch of cold process. I got the recipe from the book "The Everything Soapmaking Book" by Alicia Grosso. I like the layout of the recipes for starters into different sized batches for each recipe. I used one that had olive oil, coconut...
I've been browsing this forum for a few months. Started off wanting to make lotions and got caught off taking soap classes for melt and pour and then CP. I haven't tried the CP yet but am getting very close to trying my first batch.
However, my question has to do with lotions. I got fed...
