Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

Yes yes, don’t worry! I bought some olive oil and some coconut oil (same oils), but I’m pretty sure the old olive oil was the issue here. Thank you for the reminder I really appreciate it! :)

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

Hello everyone! So I did everything you suggested, separately, to see what’s the real problem so we can all avoid it in the future. I started by weighing in grams with the same material, seized again. I then decided to change the oils, and it worked! The feeling was amazing! My first soaps! I...

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

So even if I measured everything with ‘fl oz’ it’s not the same ratio/pourcentage as if I would’ve measured everything with ‘oz’? I didn’t know that. I will try again with grams, it would be better. Thank you so much. I will try everything you just said. I will go buy some new oils, lye and an...

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

Oh really? Oops. But if I measured everything with the same unit, wouldn’t it be the same ratio?

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

It was a ’Starfrit’ scale from Walmart, I don’t know if it’s reliable, but if it’s not, the ratio would still be the same, since I measured everything with it, am I wrong? It was ‘fl oz’ for everything. The temperature of the area was around 75 F. I measured the water and the lye separately. It...

I bought 25 kg. I tried twice, and the second time it was at room temperature. I use tap water though, do you think it might be that? I don’t know.. I think that’s what I’m going to do. I will go buy some oils tomorrow and try again. Thanks a lot. I’ll keep you updated…

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

@Jersey Girl I don’t see a brand name on the bag. It only says ‘Caustic Soda Pearls 99%’, the bag is all white and it’s written in black and red, I bought it from a local store in Canada.

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

@TheGecko First time they were about 115 F, and second time was at room temp, so around 75-85 F. For the lye, I tried to fully dissolve it, but no matter how much I stirred, it couldn’t dissolve. I’ve read somewhere that it can happen since it’s not 100% NaOH, that probably the 1% couldn’t...

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

@DeeAnna : Nothing at all! The lye is Sodium Hydroxide 99%, and the olive oil is a little bit old - maybe 2 or 3 years old. I don’t know if these elements could’ve caused the seizing, though I doubt it… Also, the lye couldn’t totally dissolve in the water. I’ve read somewhere that it happens, so...

Help - Soap Seized Immediately After Adding The Lye

Hello everyone, I just tried my first batch of soap, cold processed with the following ratios of oils and lye: NaOH: 6.9 oz Water: 16 oz Olive Oil: 40 oz Coconut Oil: 10 oz Well, the instant the lye touched the oil it became like mashed potatoes, I couldn’t even mix it with a stick blender...
