Start giving the lye a cold bath, that brings the temp down. Just fill up a basin or wash tub with ice cold water, even drop in ice cubes if you need to and set the lye in there and it will cool down. I'm so impatient when I make soap (I have kids that need tending) so I always use hot and...
Having ordered from Brambleberry myself and knowing Anne-Marie I feel that this situation your going through is just a fluke. Brambleberry offers wonderful service, please don't give up on them. All around Brambleberry has a great reputation.
About 17 years ago I was given a book by mother that had handmade body product recipes inside. I was shocked that people could actually make their own products. I started playing around with them and really fell in love with the whole process. A couple years later I got involved with a group...
I made some lemon scented soap and used poppyseeds. None of my soap leaves my home without it being tested out and my test didn't go so well. The poppyseeds scratched horribly. Of course, it was my first time using poppyseeds  Has anyone else had this problem with poppyseeds before?
Hey Gigi!!
Your here. How exciting this is. It is so great to have you join. You make such lovely soap and I love that linen spray. I'm working on my blog as I jump around on the net tonight. Can't wait to share all about your creations. WELCOME TO THE SOAP MAKING FORUM :D

I sincerely apologize for my mistake to all soapers who may have read my post here and took it as sound advice. I made in error about the honey. It is, in fact, beeswax that is suppose to prevent ash from forming on soaps and not honey.
I'm not exactly sure what book it is written in...
Judilynn,
That is funny about the lye soap. I've actually heard people say that to me. I know of a woman here in MN that sells soap. Not sure how long she has been doing it but she uses the basic oils (olive, palm, coconut) and doesn't color her soaps with synthetic dyes or natural...
I work in the basement. I'd like to do it in the kitchen because our basement gets so cold in the winter (even though its heated it just doesn't help my cold bones) but I have 3 children that I don't want in the area where I keep lye, etc... I was lucky that I moved into a house with a semi...
Thanks for replying to that. I have never tried it myself and now I won't since it didn't work for you. Thanks so much :D I rarely get ash also and if I do get it, its a very thin thin layer so I just leave it and it doesn't seem to prevent people from wanting my soap.
I remove mine from...
I agree with the others... definitely ash. I've read in some of the soapmaking books and also heard from other soapers that adding honey to your recipe keeps ash from forming. I haven't tried it myself.
