    oily soap question

Here's a recipe I tried out. When I unmolded it to cut one side was very oily. I'm wondering if it was the castor oil that did it? Bar Soap With 5% discount. Lye Amount: 234.95 Grams Water Amount: 143.33 Grams Goat milk: 400 Grams Cocoa Butter 310 Grams Olive 700 Grams Castor 110...

looks like Reese peanut butter cups

Really? In a couple days it will change? Is that because the lighter center section is exposed to air, and darkens as it dries? Just curious..

looks like Reese peanut butter cups

I made two batches of soap recently, and the finished, cured bars look like Reese's cups when cut. Dark outside, but creamy ivory center throughout. I don't mind one bit cause it looks pretty cool :), but im curious as to why it did this. I'm thinking it had to do with the vanilla fragrance...

    Bastille yellowing around edges?

Oh, I keep some of my oils in vacuum bags in the chest freezer. I just don't like half melted bags of oil laying around. :)) glad to hear it doesn't sound like DOS to you...I'm a bit bummed though that the lovely green it had is disappearing to an ugly yellow. I was hoping more for a greenish...

    Bastille yellowing around edges?

I don't "think" my soap has a case of DOS, because I didn't overly superfat (5%), and I used a freshly opened bottle of olive oil and frozen coconut oil. When I poured it, it was a lovely lime green, but now, after curing for a few weeks, the bars have started to yellow around the edges. I had...

cocoa butter soap turned out interesting...

to tonid Yes..this was fresh HP...I never made HP before..well not intentionally, anyway.. I actually set out to make HP this time, so that may be what it is. I always cure my bars but I also always wash with an uncured sample, too. Guess its my way of testing a bar to see if I'll need to...

cocoa butter soap turned out interesting...

Well, then, I just don't understand....lol...maybe I'll just keep these bars for myself and family, and try again. Like I said, after you're dry, it's wonderful. Now I forgot to mention I used about 1/2 oz of lavender essential oil in this, but I wouldn't think that would throw it off...

cocoa butter soap turned out interesting...

Yes, I ran it through a calculator...18oz cocoa butter, 8 oz CO, 8 avocado oil, came out to be about 3.44 oz lye....might have been a bit more than 2% superfat...since this was fresh Nubian goat milk, and I didn't count the goat butterfat in the recipe... In any event, the "final" results are...

cocoa butter soap turned out interesting...

Hokie, dokie... I was out of shea butter, so I decided to sub cocoa butter instead and made a trial batch. Very heavy in the cocoa butter (like 50%), CO 25%, avocado oil 25%. Goat's milk: water= 2:1 ratio and NaOH..... Ok, I did this HP since I was in a experimental mood  and go...

    SUPER FAST trace and sure

OK, so I've made several batches of soap throughout the last couple of years, mainly using recipes found here, there, and yonder.. :D So, Saturday, I decided to take a recipe and completely change up the oils, just substituting solids for solids, liquids for liquids, etc. I subbed shea...
