Sand as a heat regulator for cavity molds?

Maybe friendly plastic or some sort of casting or craft resin, that doesn’t harden quickly? I think people use some sort of seeds or fruit pits in heating pads. The kind you microwave, that’s like a little pillow? Maybe tear some of those open and use the innards.

Sand as a heat regulator for cavity molds?

Why wash dirty skin when you can just remove it!

Sand as a heat regulator for cavity molds?

I’m not sure. In my experience with sand, I haven’t found it to be particularly good at retaining heat. It’s not a fluid really, just many many tiny solids, each with more surface area relative to mass. Probably some sort of very dense/viscous liquid would be better? But messier... sand is...

What made you pick your avatar/ username?!

My username honors a beloved late pet. I’ve been looking for a way to use Teletubby Gowron since I stole him from someone a while back. It doesn’t particularly say much about me other than I like Star Trek and stealing ideas from people funnier than I am.

Is it normal to just stare at your soap and sniff it?

I do it for “serious scientific testing quality control and marketing purposes!” then I do it again for the fun.

Making soap the REALLY old fashioned way

“There's not a lot of info out there on how to make soap from ashes. Nobody does that anymore.” Savon de Marseille is still made from ashes (and salt water...but it’s ashes of sea plants, not hardwood...and it’s always pure vegetable soap, not lard). Any of the four or five soap producers...

Horrible smells from lye water infusions...sometimes!

thanks for the info...I now want to try oat milk soap. There is this chocolate oat milk that my kids love...might make a nice soap! two days ago I made goats’ milk soap again, using the exact same method as the first time (first dissolving the lye, mostly, in 230g water, then cooling it off...

Horrible smells from lye water infusions...sometimes!

Thanks, Susan! I will try it. I’ve done ice baths (like for goat’s milk and other things) but the lye solution itself was almost surely above 100F when I added my delicate ingredients. I foolishly thought, with the tea, that 80C would be fine since that’s the right temp for making actual...

    Patchouli Blend Ideas

I just did a mix of patchouli and rosewood (10g patchouli 15g rosewood, for a kilo of oils, so not that strong) and it’s quite nice. My wife and kids all love it, but my wife generally hates straight patchouli. I agree with commenters above on mixes with sandalwood, lavender and orange also...

Horrible smells from lye water infusions...sometimes!

What seems to work is a combination of heated infusion (the infusing jar or bottle a couple hours on low heat in a water bath) and then letting it sit for a couple weeks. The chamomile infusion is really nice, a much softer, warmer smell than chamomile essential oil, still quite present in the...

Does anybody here promote CP soap as shampoo?

I’ve been selling liquid and bar soap at local markets for a few months now. Every single day at least two people ask if I sell shampoo bars, and then most times we get into a friendly discussion about soap versus shampoo/synthetic surfectants (this usually involves me explaining basic soap...

Horrible smells from lye water infusions...sometimes!

Hi Dawni, yes, both the chamomile and calendula soaps I have made smell basically the same as before mixing and curing...but I infuse the oils also, and It might very well be due to the infused oils. Thanks very much for all the responses! I do also infuse my oils. I was trying to do both, on...

Horrible smells from lye water infusions...sometimes!

Hello, I’ve been making liquid and solid soaps for a few months and really appreciate this very helpful forum! So far lots of fun and no big problems, but I’d appreciate any insight to my current issue. The last two times I tried to infuse the lye water (green jasmine tea, and today...
