Do I need a paring knife in my soap toolkit? I have some cheap butterknives that I could use. If all I need is a flat edge to slide off soda ash, I don't see why it would necessarily need to be a paring knife. What's your take?

There are methods to remove soda ash that do not involve blades, whatsoever. So, no, you don't have to have a paring knife. That would not have to be a dedicated soaping item, even if you decided you needed one. It is cured soap that you would be cutting, so there would be no lye left in the soap to damage whatever blade you did decide to use.
