Is there a way to determine bacteria just by looking at a homemade product? I can visually tell when mold occurs but not sure how to determine bacteria.

No, you would have to have it challenge tested. Unless you see the mold you won't know if something is growing. That's why safe practice, especially with body products are important. Make sure you are sterilizing your containers and equipement before using.

You can buy your own testing kit for bacteria and molds from Making Cosmetics. com. I have used it and I like it. Just make sure to closely follow the directions.

Just FYI - bacteria and mold are completely different things. Completely. Nearly as different as bacteria and humans. I mention it because the way you handle (and protect against) each is, as would be expected, very different. And where neither are good in you products, mold is usually unsightly, but bacteria can produce much more serious issues when present in cosmetics/soaps/etc.
