I am trying to find a recipe for a natural heat protectant spray that you would put on your hair before flat ironing or blow drying. I have a hair serum that you would use after, but nothing for the before. Any ideas? I have not found much online.

I'm not sure you could get a completely natural and effective product, the store bought ones are very similar to hair conditioner. Lots of silicones, cetrimonium chloride and hydrolysed proteins.

Have a look at swiftcraftymonkey for some hair product ideas, but I think you won't find anything that does a good job without some synthetics in it somewhere.

Have you checked the swiftcraftymonkey blog?

The Herbarie has hair mask and leave-in conditioner formulas. You might also check the formula section of cosmetic industry chemical supply companies.
