The lard smell reflects the breed, the age and the diet of the animals as well as a person's unique sense of smell. It is hard to control. My suggestion is to buy deodorized lard unless you figure out a process to deodorize it yourself. It can probably be done with the use of activated charcoal but I haven't tried it. The lard I got from Soaper's choice smells of lard when I melt it but even the unscented soaps I made with it don't smell of lard.
 
I haven't dipped into home rendering, do you have a certain process you follow to use it in soap?

My parents do it for me. :)
I think they just start off with a bit of water, so that chopped fat doesn't burn straight away. Put it on low heat and when crispies are golden brown, lard is ready.
Crispies get loads of salt and get eaten later
Nothing's wasted. ;)
