I finally got around to removing the cabinet in my work area, to replace it with better storage, and I'm glad I did! The wall behind it was covered in mold.. yuck!! It's all on the paint, coming off fairly easily, so if I'm lucky, it isn't in the wall itself necessitating drywall and stud/brace replacement.
I'm now left with a question for anyone else who's ever had to go through this.. even though all of my butters and packaged soaps in that cabinet were wrapped and airtight, should I throw them out and start over? Cautious me says toss it all, but logical me says they should be fine because they were airtight and there was absolutely zero mold inside where they were sitting. Tossing everything out isn't an appealing scenario, of course, and will be a hefty financial waste... but definitely well worth it, if the products are tainted in any way. I don't want anyone getting sick from using my soaps or lotions!!

Opinions?

if everything is like you said: wrapped and airtight, i see no point tossing it away.

What a bummer, SoapyQueenBee. I can't advise you at all (this sounds like a topic for CanaDawn and DeeAnna!) but I certainly sympathize. I'd hate to throw out supplies but I'd feel just as cautious. My husband had a mold problem in his man cave a couple of years ago so went to True Value and bought a kit to send off for analysis. I think it was about $40. He took scrapings (swabs maybe?) from various spots, mailed it off, and got the results fairly quickly. He felt much better knowing it was just a harmless household mold so we didn't need to call in professionals to get rid of it. It was from a leaky spot where rain came in so lots of clean-up and a roof trim repair took care of it. Good luck with your project!

I am so sorry to hear that. As you probably know, there are companies that specialize in mold problems. Maybe calling them, explain the situation and how well wrapped your supplies were and see what they say. I can certainly understand (and appreciate) your concern about the quality of your products.

Nothing's worth the risk of someone getting sick or having an allergic reaction to something I've made, imo! It's going to be about $1300 in losses, but nothing I'll lose sleep over, if it keeps even one person from having a reaction to contaminated product.

I'm already speaking with a mold removal specialist I know well - nice to have him in the back pocket! His opinion is that I should toss anything that wasn't airtight, and wipe down the rest of the packages with my peroxide solution but no worries about them beyond that.
Thank you guys for such quick replies!
