Hi again,
I have been making a few lip balms using cocoa butter and shea butter and most of the recipes have turned out great. But a few have ended in a gritty balm. I have heard that I should heat the cocoa and shea butters gradually and slowly (over 40 minutes), but I've also heard that I need to heat it for less than 20 minutes to avoid the gritty texture. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? The recipe also includes; tallow, olive oil, vitamin E, and essential oils.
Thanks!

Any of the butters can turn gritty with time. As far as I know it isn't a matter of how long you heat them as much as it is how quickly you cool them. The faster they cool the smoother they will be. At least until they warm up and cool down again, say, in a pocket or left in the car.

The only help for it I know of is ButterEz http://www.lotioncrafter.com/butterez-trade.html but other suppliers may have something similar.
