Someone gave me some bentonite clay that was purchased in a wine making shop. It's still in the original package and I would like to use some in soap sometime, but it appears to be coarser than the bentonite I ordered from one of the soap supply places online (can't remember which). Should I just try a batch with the coarser clay or run it through a grinder first? It's about the texture of beach sand whereas the clay I ordered online is more of a powder.

That is what I would do. If you can use it in wine, it should be OK for soap, just put it through the coffee grinder.
