How do I calculate how many different FO/EO and botanicals to add to a recipe and how much? If too many FO/EO are added to a multiple oil base, doesn't that throw off the balance of something? Do I make sense?

Also, why do some recipes use sugar and salt?

Most people use in the range of .5 to 1 oz. fragrance per pound of oils in the recipe. I vary the percentage in the recipe according to how strong the fragrance is and how well it sticks. You won't affect the recipe at all; there's no need to compensate for fragrance.

If you're using EO, be mindful of possible sensitivities and don't overdo it.

If you enter your recipe into SoapCalc, there's a place to add what percentage fragrance PPO you want to use, and it will calculate the amount you need for that recipe.

Sugar is said to increase lathering. Salt is used in salt bars to give the benefits of bath salts in the shower, and because people love the way it makes their skin feel. One forum member recently said it's like the way you feel after swimming in the ocean....really clean.

Happy Soaping!

I agree that the FO/EO doesn't affect the base oils mixture of your soap.

You sometimes may want to compensate the actual scent if you used
a TON of non-deodorized cocoa butter but in a balanced recipe not
that much choco smell comes through.

Usage amounts of FOs and EOs depend on if you HP or CP and
the general strength of the scent in question. You are your own
best judge of stength.
I agree that usuage levels do usually fall between .5 to 1 oz per pound
of oils.

There are several standards that Perfumers and European
Bath & Body makers must follow to comply with their laws
and the standards that are given for the EOs are a great
base line to go with along with your Supplier's suggested
usage rate for whatever application you are using.

I've seen where soapers have commented about adding sugar but I didn't really know the reason. When should it be added and how much per pound of oils?

sugar is added at 5-15 grams per pound of oils. dissolve it completely in the water before adding the lye.

I personally use 1 Tablespoon of sugar per pound of oils.
It's one of the few things i use as a volume measurement.
I'm sure I could go measure out a TBs real quick but My batches
turn out lovely as is.

Weight is best but I'm lazy on the 1 TBS of sugar. :)
