I got some of this the same time I got my lye(s) because the books recommended using it for HP soap. However, I'm thinking it could be useful testing CP bar pH as well. Will it cause any kind of discoloration or damage to the soap to try it directly on the bars? Or should I remove a curl to test it?

I'd mix a little bit of soap with equal part alcohol and add the phenol.

I did a write up a couple months ago about doing this with turmeric. I prefer turmeric because phenol has a 1 year shelf life.

I still don't get it why phenolphtalein or turmeric would be usefull in testing pH of soap. From what I've read handmade soaps have ph between 9-10.5, isn't that true?
So with phenolphtalein you can only see if soap has more or less than pH 8. So, not really usefull IMO. And turmeric, pretty much the same story.
