    Your Curing Area

I'm using a black metal rack that I was given for Christmas. Previously, I was using a bookshelf that I had rigged out by placing a wooden shoe rack on each shelf to allow for air circulation.

Mica swirl on top - question

Smells like it too! The peppermint really comes through much more than the lavender, despite using twice as much lavender as mint.

Mica swirl on top - question

Well, I decided to cut from the bottom as it dragged even from the side. Placed the soap very gently on a piece of parchment upside down so that I didn't mess up the design, then cut. Worked quite well! Thanks for all the suggestions :)

Mica swirl on top - question

Speak of the devil - I was thinking of making peaks with a spoon, as that's what I usually do with my tops. I want to try that next time. I'd love to see a picture of yours because I'm very curious about what it looks like!

Mica swirl on top - question

Yes I was wondering that as well. It seems like all of the OO has saponified, but I'm just not sure what it will be like until I cut into it. I love experimenting!

Mica swirl on top - question

I made a batch of lavender mint soap last night, and thought I would mix things up a bit and do a mica swirl on top. I used merlot mica dissolved in about a tsp of OO. I randomly sprinkled it over the batter once I had poured it in the mold and then swirled around with a chopstick once the...

    what am i doing wrong???

I have naturally oily hair. It was so bad with regular shampoo that I would sometimes wash my hair twice a day to feel clean. I thought that in making my own shampoo bar, that I would need a bar with a high amount of coconut oil for it to work. However, I've discovered that works best for me is...

    Getting supplies in Canada.

Hmmm I'm not sure about what's local to you, I'm in BC. When I started, I tried to get things in local shops, but ultimately found (like you) that a lot of things either weren't available or were too expensive. I ended up learning about a place in Surrey, BC called Voyageur that sells...

using alcohol to prevent ash questions...

I use isopropyl alcohol - buy it at 99% and dilute with a bit of water to bring it down to 91%, as that's what I read worked best. I spray it as soon as I've done my tops and really saturate the soap. I've done dozen of batches like this since I learned about it and it works great!

    Hello From up North

Welcome! Not sure what their shipping is like to Northern Ont, but Voyageur has a great selection and you can get them to put together your order and provide you with a quote before they send it. I've found their shipping costs to be very reasonable. Have fun!

    New soaps

Yes it is! When I made it, I was imagining black on the bottom (chocolate), brown in the middle (mineral mud) and white on top (TD). But I think that the sugars in the ginger beer had other plans, because the top went a sort of shocking orangey-brown. One of those things that you can pretend you...

    New soaps

Yes, the Italian lemon EO was a nice surprise, and more aromatic than the lemon EO that I usually use

    New soaps

I've had a lot of fun playing with scents and designs this past week and thought I'd share! Started using tussah silk as well and I love the soft, smooth feel of the bars so far. Enjoy! 1) Limoncello - scented with citrus EOs, including a lovely lemon EO that my dad brought back from the...

Why oh why are my soaps doing this???

Glad to hear you liked Vancouver! Come again! I had this issue once when I rushed mixing TD in (water soluble, dissolved in a bit of water). When I stick blend well, it doesn't seem to happen. Hope everything works out for you! I really love the design of the second soap.

Coconut Milk Soap - Oh the smell!!!!!!

I've never had a bad smell with either coconut cream or goats milk. In both cases, I used the milk full strength, froze it in ice cube trays, and mixed the lye with the cubes. The only scent was a nice milky one.

    Goats Milk Soap

I'm starting to appreciate simple more and more. After batch after batch of swirls, embeds, etc., it's nice to strip things down a bit.
