    Cold lye mixture

Ah so the lard is the culprit. How much sodium citrate do you use? Do you add it to the lye mixture or oils?

    Cold lye mixture

Thank you! Hopefully the lye dissolved fully, I guess I will see 😬 I was buying my gm soap from someone local, and I'm trying the recipe she uses (above), except I swapped out the Palm oil in her recipe for the lard I already had. She said to lower the super fat from 5% to 4% due to the high...

    Cold lye mixture

I am pretty new to soap making, made a few batches a few years ago and decided to try again with a different recipe. My instructions say the oils should be 90-120 degrees, and the lye mixture should get to 90 degrees before adding oils. I made a small test batch (about 12 ounces) of goat milk...

    Uncoloured lard soap

Do you mind sharing how much citric acid/extra lye you add, and when? My first few batches of soap were very similar to your recipe (minus salt & sugar), except I used olive oil instead of sunflower, but the soap just ruined our wash cloths (thinking hard water, not rinsing out). Would love to...

    Soapers Not Using Chelators.

I'm still fairly new to soapmaking (and am pretty picky about weird sounding chemicals in my products) but after a few batches of my own soap, as well as using other locally handcrafted soap, the soap buildup on wash cloths especially, is enough to make me search out a chelator to use in my next...

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

Great info to try, thanks! I feel ready to move on and try again once I get my chelators. I've heard of people using half the laundry soap, but I can never bring myself to. My husband does work in construction, so maybe not for his laundry ;)

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

Oh how I miss soft towels (and my poor husband as well, lol!) I told him we can't use the new ones I bought until I get this figured out, lol.

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

A lot of great information, thank you! :) I don't use 40% coconut, only 20%.....but do use 40% lard...hmm. I think I will give it a go with the chelator and possibly lower the lye discount to 4% (currently at 5).

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

Thank you! How much less laundry soap do you use? Would you say about half of the amount that you would use on a load of say, clothing? Do you wash the towels on hot as someone recommended above? I have started with the extra rinses (really I just run it through another cycle with no soap so it...

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

I've done that before, but was hoping I could tweak something in the recipe to make it rinse off easier. Usually on warm I believe. I use the All free and clear. The recipe says 5%.. I have borax! I can give that a try, thank you :)

    Soap buildup on wash cloths

Hi all, I'm pretty new to soap making, I've made two batches so far with pretty similar ingredients. Cold process, goat milk, coconut oil, olive oil/sunflower oil, castor oil, lye. I've noticed the soap is building up on our wash cloths and not coming out in the wash, making the wash cloth heavy...

    Calendula Powder?

I'm looking for a recipe for winter use, do you mind sharing yours? :)

Squeaky Clean, Sticky Feeling during rinse.

Thank you, I'll try that out on my next batch :)

Squeaky Clean, Sticky Feeling during rinse.

Thank you, hard water is possible, but other soaps (many handmade) that I've used haven't had this issue with a clean rinse so I was more leaning towards one of the ingredients or something with the recipe. Thank you, what percent water do you use?

Squeaky Clean, Sticky Feeling during rinse.

Oooh...I did not add any extra oil/fat, just went with the 5% default super fat discount in soap calc....is my soap too lye heavy? I'll post the recipe..

Squeaky Clean, Sticky Feeling during rinse.

Looking for tips on a smooth soft rinse. I made my first batch of soap using a recipe that was recommended on one of the threads. It was a goat milk soap using 40% Lard, 25% Sunflower oil, 20% Coconut oil, 10% Shea Butter and 5% Castor oil. I let the bars cure for 5 weeks and tested one. It was...
