What soapy thing have you done today?

Oh I had one of those FO browsing days last month. I found myself at the end of NG's long list of oils with 90 1oz samples in my cart. I pared it down to onlyyy 3 dozen, and then patted myself on the back for my great restraint 😉

    Epsom Salt

I don't know about bath and body applications, but if you have any school-aged kids in your life there's some great crystal growing science experiments you can do with them.

What soapy thing have you done today?

🤞🤞 Oooh! I'd love to hear how it works for you! I've had a serious ash issue every time I've used cavity molds!

    Variations in AC (Activated Charcoal)

You're too kind, @Zing ! The gold is Nurture Soap's Rapunzel Mica. I expected it to be much lighter and wasn't sure if I'd like it, but it turned out to be the perfect gold for this!

    Variations in AC (Activated Charcoal)

I'm continuing with my AC messes here instead of starting a new thread for each. Hope that's ok! This is my response to @Jan Kates thread here Here (Black Mica) in regards to a black soap without grey lather. I had read that using a discoloring FO could help get soap closer to black so that...

    New to soap.

    Welcome! 🙂

    Black Mica

Your post put black soap on the top of my list. I just poured a loaf of Bastille with a discoloring FO and 1tsp AC PPO. I poured a small guest soap prior to adding the scent to compare the color. Will be back with results after the cut. 🙂

    Black Mica

I'm very interested to hear feedback on this as well. I remember reading once of a person intentionally using a dark discoloring FO to get the soap part-way there so they needed less colorant to get their black (and therefore lighter lather), but I have no personal experience to suggest it.

    Variations in AC (Activated Charcoal)

@TheGecko goodness, the clean up from just these two loaves was a pain, but omg I can't imagine that dust everywhere!!

    Variations in AC (Activated Charcoal)

Is your preference due to its effect on the finished soap, its behavior, or something else? I've seen that some folks find it drying and others find it stains their washcloths.

    Variations in AC (Activated Charcoal)

Hi All! I bought a pound of Activated Charcoal and now I'm making messes. :) I call these The Ultrasound and My First Pencil Lines. Made with 50% Lard, 25% OO, 10% CO, 10% Apricot Kernel, and 5% Castor. The ultrasound (my failed attempt at a more zebra-stripe-like ITP) are scented with...

    Lard and Molasses

Back nearly 6 weeks later with mundane results! Plain Lard on the left and Molasses on the right. As expected molasses had some heating issues and most of the tops are cracked. Disappointingly small color in the molasses soap too. Per @ResolvableOwl I may try a larger molasses amount next...

    Newbie 100% Coconut Oil Experiment

Thanks All for your lovely comments!! ❤ @AliOop I hope the 28% works out for you! I'm really attached to the idea of a circle loaf, so thank you for the PVC pipe recommendation! There's that great saying, "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today." So...

    Newbie 100% Coconut Oil Experiment

Hello All! Here to share my recent experiment with 100% Coconut Oil. One set of plain bars and one set of salt bars. I haven't really liked any of the soaps I've made that have +15% CO in them, so this experiment with SF came about because I had +2lbs of CO that expired in 2020. I'm using...

    Lard and Molasses

Thank you (and @IrishLass!) for the tip! I'm all about safety, so this makes me feel much more confident about dealing with a new chemical reaction. And thank you as well for the guidance with heating and cooling the lard!! Thank you for the calculation and the information! I get so nervous...

    Lard and Molasses

Hi All! I spent my early soaping days using no additives to focus on lye safety, emulsion, trace, controlling gel phase. I wanted to make sure I had a full grasp of the basics before getting fancy. In the last month I used my first FOs...then micas...and now I feel ready to experiment with...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I made soap today! :-D One batch of ZNSC with Nurture Soap's Champagne FO and one batch of my ever-evolving lard-heavy recipe with NS's Honeysuckle FO, jade green mica, and aztec gold mica in a one pot swirl. I've been using a 5% SF for my lardy soap experiments. I'm going to do some...
