Packaging for scent and shelf life

I'm getting ready to select my soap packaging. It is CP, goat's milk, with a touch of Rosemary EO and honey to help preserve it. My question is this: Should soap 'breathe' -- have open packaging? -- to prevent spoilage? Should soap be plastic wrapped or sealed -- to preserve scent? Does a...

    Favorite supply stores?

I used to get drain-cleaner lye from Tractor Supply, but it took a conversation with the manager each time to convince them I wasn't using it for Crack! I now get my lye via Amazon.com. Fast with that famous Amazon customer service: Food Grade Sodium Hydroxide Lye Micro Beads, 2 Lbs. (Buy 5 get...

strained yolks After 2 weeks my fresh goat's milk and strained yolk soap is fantastic. No specks, no smell, no rough spots. Super creamy. It's going to be my base formula from now on.

Why Do I Have to Abide by FDA Rules....

Emily of Indigo Wild, this is a fine example of good-will towards your customer's concerns. My 'day-job' is a social network community manager for a mega-corporation, and I just want to say; well done. Everyone benefits when companies large and small stay friendly and connected to both their...

    Egg yolk soap

Reporting back after one week after straining egg yolk through wire mesh strainer. For a 5 lb recipe: I whipped 4 yolks into a cup of oil with a high speed blender, then blended with entire oil in recipe. I used goat's milk frozen into ice cubes, so the milk/lye never got over 85 degrees...

Seeking the SUPER CREAMY magic ingredient

I use fresh whole goat's milk as all the liquid content. I just bought a cream separator, and after reading how some of you add cream at trace, I will now try to separate, use whole milk as the first part of the liquid and add more cream at trace. I'll report back in a few weeks! I didn't...

    Egg yolk soap

After reading about the membrane issue, I put one of my farm egg yolks (which have a much denser and darker yolk than commercial eggs) in a fine wire-mesh strainer. I broke it and had to push it around with my finger to get the thick yolk to leak through the wire. When it was all through...

Seeking the SUPER CREAMY magic ingredient

I'm addicted to creamy. I'm told my fresh goat's milk soap is indeed creamy, but I just got back from a hotel, and the commercial 'facial bar' there was so creamy it made me want to cry. If only I could do that! My recipes which include Honey (at trace) seem creamier than those without. Those...

    dairy soaps

I freeze fresh goat's milk into ice cubes, and use that as 100% liquid (replacement for water). Freezing keeps the milk from scorching when you sprinkle lye on it, as long as you stir like a maniac. As soon as it drops a couple of degrees after rising steadily, I combine with the oils. A...

    what does "gel" mean

Besides the look of the soap, what does gelling do to the quality? I have soap I made which gelled compared to soap that didn't and I'm comparing them now, but because my recipes weren't identical, I'm not sure. I'm trying to go for a very creamy lather. Gel is glycerin, right?

Can I store soap in non-temp controlled outbuilding?

I need some guidance. Can soap be cured and stored in temps that range from 10 degrees to 110 degrees? Would this impact curing? temp? texture? Or is it okay as long as they have good air circulation?

I've searched the web... I see a lot about Bamboo Charcoal and the nifty black soap it makes, but cannot find a recipe. Any ideas? I'm a new soaper, so I'd prefer to start with a tried recipe than experiment. Thanks!
