    Vegan / Vegetarian Choices

The first thing that popped into my head when I read this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXIdcA6mlV4 But seriously, I do believe we should respect all living things, and try to make sustainable choices. For me, fruitarianism is a bit extreme, but I can respect the choice. Studies suggest...

    Vegan / Vegetarian Choices

I started phasing out meat about 10 years ago when I got my first pet chickens. They each had their own little personalities and I just couldn't eat chicken anymore. After I got my first goats about 6 years ago, all other forms of meat had to go. They are full of personality, kind of like dogs...

    Quick and easy HP soap.

I really wasn't trying to offend anyone, but clearly I did. I'm sorry to those of you who feel disrespected. Sometimes things just don't translate the same way in print that they do in real life. My niece rubs tallow all over herself as a moisturizer. I tell her it's gross. She laughs and...

    How to use silk

I do. 1/2 - 1 oz water is all you need, so I just subtract that from my milk. And the lye is a portion of the measured lye that would be going in, not extra.

    Quick and easy HP soap.

I'm vegetarian so I won't use any animal fats, but even if I weren't, I can't imagine why anyone would want to rub bacon grease all over themselves. I just think lard and tallow soaps are gross. There's my unsolicited two cents worth of opinion ;) I do both hot process and CP, and I haven't...

    How to use silk

Yes, that's the problem. I also let the silk soak in a tiny bit of distilled water, then add a tiny bit of the lye to that, and smash the silk with a hard spoon to dissolve while it's hot. I let that cool, pour it over my frozen milk, then add the rest of the lye as usual. Don't breathe...

Stupid question but it keeps confusing me about E.O usage rates?

If it helps with the math, my smart phone has a % key in the calculator - I'm guessing they all do. It makes it super easy to calculate percentages without having to convert to decimals. So, to calculate 5% of 16oz oils it's just: 16 x 5% = For half a percent of 16oz, it's 16 x .5% = Instead...

What brought you to making soap?

Goat Milk! I had gallons upon gallons of extra goat milk taking up space in the frig, couldn't sell it due to ridiculous raw milk sales laws, couldn't find enough people to give it away to, and couldn't handle pouring it down the drain. After a few minutes of googling what to do with extra goat...

Stupid question but it keeps confusing me about E.O usage rates?

It depends on what oil you're using. Some can be used at 5% of total oil weight, others can only be used safely at .05% of total oil weight, or even less. Some have no restrictions, so you can get crazy and add more. Some can't be used on the skin at all. The book "Essential Oil Safety" by...

White patches in and on soap!? Just soda ash??

Are you using distilled water or some other liquid? I tend to get ash when using coffee or salt water for my liquid, but not with milk or plain distilled water.

    Lye discount. organic certification

I think there's an exemption for lye in soap. It can be certified organic and the lye is "ignored": This is from this thread: http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=57543 But it's my understanding that products have to be certified at the manufacturing level, so you'd be the one that...

I use myrrh in my goat milk, oatmeal and honey soap. It blends nicely with that earthy scent you get from the oats but isn't super strong. Coffee sounds like a nice one for that, too. Good luck with the batch!

Awesome. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing then. Thanks

Q - How to preserve soap so it lasts "forever"?

I made a 20% superfat goat milk castille quite awhile ago and was worried it would go bad before I could use it all. After a 3-month cure, I wrapped the bars in plastic wrap and put them in the freezer. I think they've been in there at least a year. I just pull one out when I need it and let it...

IFRA and safety standards of EO

Thank you, because I wasn't 100% sure. And that book is AMAZING. Should rosemary oil extract or vitamin e (or some other antioxidant) be added to essential oils that are prone to oxidation? I've been keeping mine in the frig, but now I'm wondering if that's not enough. I think I'm going to toss...

    Soap Making Resource

Ideally, you should look at the MSDS (safety data sheet) and see what percentage of eugenol is in your oil. If it's a really strong one or really weak one, that will change the max. amount you should use. The issue with oils that cause "sensitization" is that long term exposure to higher than...

    Slow Trace vs. Soft Bar?

I love the marbled one! I've had crumbly soap once. I think it was related to using a lot of pigment.

Based on my calcs, the clove oil in that recipe is about three times the IFRA recommend max for soap. You should always check the msds for your essential oils, and check the max for each component in the oil on the IFRA website before using...just like you would run each recipe through a lye...

IFRA and safety standards of EO

I think what that box is saying is that those ingredients are sensitizers when they are oxidized, so you need to do something to prevent oxidation? I also think those two components need to be listed in your ingredient list if they are used over a certain amount, even if they're just present in...

Extracts can you use them for anything other than baking?

I've tried using vanilla extract and almond extract in HP after the cook. They did make it seize up a bit, but that may have just been because the extracts were cool and I was adding them to the hot batter. There was no scent left in either of them after a day. I don't think alcohol-based...
