Visions of lovely orange and yellow swirls... (UPDATE W/PIC)

I would have the same problem with scent oils accelerating my trace. After my lye solution was prepped, I would add my scent oils to my base oils. I would then combine everything. I discovered that no scent was diminished using this method. I hope this helps. With this method, I had about...

    how much fragrance oil?

Thanks for the input. I do cp. I have 4oz of verbena eo. I'm afraid of not using enough so I don't want all that eo to have been wasted. With one of my earlier batches, I used an expensive fo from the body shop (oceanus). What a huge mistake. The second the fo made contact with the...

YAY!!! 1st batch under my belt!! take a look!!

Congrats on your successful batch! The soap looks sweet. Nice suds as well. I love the smell of lemons too. Have you ever smelled verbena eo? It smells like a fragrant version of lemon pledge. It doesn't trace as fast, so you have some time to work with it. In my experience, bars are...

    how much fragrance oil?

Generally speaking, how much fragrance oil should I add for a 5 lb batch of soap? I added about 3oz fo to a 4-5 lb batch and I got an off smell that was similar to olive oil.

To gel or not to gel?

What are the physical differences between batches of cp soap that has gone through the gel phase and soap that has been put in the freezer or fridge to prevent gelling? Is there a color difference? Is there a difference in scent? Is curing time affected by non gelling? Are results...

    Chrome utensils

The lye will dissolve the chrome and ruin the chrome plating. Just to make sure, I asked my chemistry professor today and he agreed with me. -Rick

Ques. about slats and swirling in a wooden slab mold (w/pic)

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I used ~1tbsp titanium dioxide and ultramarine blue pigment powder. This was scented with lemon verbena eo. Upon adding the eo, my entire mixture traced really fast. you can find the recipe under my other post about "waxy feeling need help." When adding...

    Juicy Couture?

I saw that scent on sweetcakes.com but they require purchases of at least $25.00 to ship.

frustrated... bf says soap making is too dangerous

Your bf is definitely over-reacting. As a chemistry major, I'm in the lab frequently working with far worse chemicals. Just practice some rules of safety. 1. Wear latex gloves 2. wear eye protection 3. have proper ventilation 4. any utensils/equipment that comes in contact with the lye...

Ques. about slats and swirling in a wooden slab mold (w/pic)

Hi everyone. I just purchased a wooden slab mold without the dividers. I love to incorporate swirls into my soaps. I notice though, with my soaps, I can only get the swirled effect on the top layer of my soaps. All the other sides have a globular/marbled look. My question is: if I get...

    Orange color ideas needed.

Thank you all for your wonderful tips and ideas. I'm a chemistry major studying to be a pharmacist at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. I picked up soap making after my organic professor showed us saponification in lab. I can't tell you how hard it is to study microbiology with so...
