Would the water % amount really make a big difference in how long it lasts though?

I've used their 7 lb containers of various types, tallow, coconut, etc. Never had a problem. Check out imstepmom on Ebay as well. She has excellent supplies.

It overheated, most likely. Did you use any milk products in your recipe?

Your FO is most likely an accelerator. It speeds up the trace in your soap, resulting in the quick emulsification. Contact the company that you purchased it from and ask about it. :)

4 oz is a good size.
